Channel: Stuff You Should Know - HowStuffWorks

[13]
hey everybody and welcome to the
[16]
internet roundup not just internet
[19]
roundup we're gonna add a V to the
[20]
beginning like Ohio State we're
[22]
established like Ohio State and I just
[26]
realized I have all my papers in paper I
[28]
don't even need this computer it's just
[30]
it's a it's kind of a prop yeah that's
[33]
how I like to look up stuff uh-huh but
[36]
it is on so maybe I'll just check into
[39]
Facebook every now and then yeah I've
[40]
got Twitter pulled up dia huh that could
[43]
be a new segment it could be all right
[45]
well that's Josh and I'm Chuck and we do
[48]
the stuff you should know podcast and we
[50]
round up the internet to articles at a
[52]
time and we only have three million more
[54]
years to go until we're finished until
[57]
they let us leave yes because they're no
[59]
longer creating new content is that
[60]
correct no they are okay all right first
[63]
up sirhan sirhan the assassin so nice
[67]
they had to name him twice killer of
[72]
Robert F Kennedy alleged killer alleged
[75]
can you say alleged if they were
[76]
convicted if enough people raised hey
[79]
about whether it was him or not but yeah
[80]
he was the convicted killer
[82]
you're right well you know who's raisin
[84]
hey Paul Schrade that's right and who is
[87]
he oh well Paul Schrade actually was
[90]
shot in the head by Sirhan Sirhan yeah
[92]
he was Robert Kennedy's labor director I
[96]
think back during his his democratic run
[100]
for the presidency in 1968 yeah and he
[102]
was walking with him through the kitchen
[104]
of the Ambassador Hotel right after
[106]
Kennedy gave a speech when shots rang
[108]
out that's right supposedly some people
[110]
say 13 shots uh-huh although Sir Hans
[113]
gun only held eight bullets that's
[115]
impossible
[116]
Paul Schrade was he took one to the head
[118]
did not die obviously because he's alive
[121]
today but Robert Kennedy was killed and
[123]
one of the reasons why people say
[124]
including Paul Schrade that Sirhan
[127]
Sirhan couldn't have been the killer
[128]
that that he couldn't have been a lone
[130]
gunman right it was because Robert
[132]
Kennedy's fatal gunshot wound came from
[134]
the back while Sirhan Sirhan was facing
[136]
him that's right and those are those
[138]
Kennedy's have magic bullets all over
[140]
the place all over the place I have
[142]
stood at that very spot oh yeah yeah
[144]
before they tore down the Ambassador
[145]
Hotel
[146]
shooting a TV commercial there overnight
[148]
and what were you selling oh man you
[151]
know what I can't even remember I'm
[153]
gonna say something silly Hanes
[155]
underwear maybe or Quaker State motor
[159]
oil maybe or State Farm auto insurance
[162]
no Toyota automobiles No
[167]
so we were shooting and it was like
[168]
Carmack 3:00 in the morning and the guy
[170]
who sort of took care of the place at
[171]
night said hey you want to go wow that's
[174]
something go to the kitchen and I went
[175]
oh yeah I certainly do and it was creepy
[179]
and awesome and now is it abandoned at
[181]
the time yeah oh man I envy you yeah it
[185]
was really awesome and it's torn down
[187]
now it's no longer there right so well
[189]
instead they put up a school apparently
[190]
Robert F Kennedy Community Schools is on
[193]
the site I don't think I knew that yeah
[195]
according to this AP article well all of
[198]
this is a long way of getting to the
[200]
headline which is sirhan sirhan has been
[202]
denied parole but interestingly Paul
[205]
Schrade showed up for the first time at
[207]
any of the parole hearings first time he
[209]
faced him since the trial in 1969 right
[213]
and he actively lobbied for him to be
[215]
released this time yeah because Paul
[217]
Schrade again he said Sirhan Sirhan
[219]
shoot me shot me shot me not again he
[224]
shot me in the head and I forgive him
[226]
right there that this this is the 15th
[228]
parole hearing I think yet 91 years old
[230]
Paul Schrade yeah
[232]
Sirhan Sirhan 71 that's right impulse
[235]
rates that I forgive you and you guys
[237]
have to let this guy out he didn't kill
[240]
Robert Kennedy it's impossible yeah
[242]
lobbied hard he spoke for an hour
[243]
apparently it was slightly rambley
[245]
because after an hour the parole hearing
[249]
committees Commissioner the Commissioner
[251]
said you need to wrap it up because
[254]
quote frankly you've lost us yeah I
[257]
think you've been lost for a long time
[259]
is what trade shot back at him yeah it
[262]
was apparently very testy the the
[263]
Commissioner was he kept admonishing
[266]
schrade to not speak directly to Sirhan
[269]
Sirhan yeah I was like you shut up I'm a
[271]
talker Sirhan Sirhan anytime I want cuz
[274]
he and I shared something in the form of
[277]
a bullet to the head that's right and
[279]
sir
[280]
and mr. sir Han claims to this day that
[285]
he doesn't remember anything that
[286]
happened after he write I guess blacked
[289]
out from drinking Tom Collins that
[290]
afternoon
[291]
yeah he's to this day he's like I don't
[293]
remember that day yeah he made a couple
[295]
of cryptic remarks around the time of
[297]
his arrest and during the trial yeah
[299]
like I did it for my country yeah yeah
[301]
but since then he's been like I don't
[303]
remember a thing
[304]
very interesting case he's like it was
[306]
the 60s if you remember the 60s you
[308]
weren't there you know what I'm saying
[310]
that's right and he well he's been
[313]
denied every time and probably will
[315]
continue to and the reason he's in
[316]
prison for life because his death
[318]
sentence was commuted right in
[320]
California overturned the death penalty
[322]
in 1972 well plus he is he could I mean
[326]
he's obviously eligible for parole or
[328]
else they wouldn't be holding these
[329]
parole hearings but he never gets parole
[331]
for the same reason he says that he
[333]
doesn't remember and in response the
[335]
parole committee says well then
[337]
therefore you're not showing remorse for
[339]
the right yeah you clearly don't
[341]
understand the enormity of the crime
[342]
therefore back to prison for you man I
[346]
think I would just say you know what I
[348]
remember now and I feel terrible about
[350]
it yeah but I mean worst thing I ever
[352]
did was shoot Robert Kennedy right let
[355]
me out yeah I mean I don't think too
[358]
many people would blame him or he could
[360]
pull a red from Shawshank and say it
[363]
doesn't make a darn difference parole
[366]
accepted yeah it was like office space
[370]
kind of I don't know where he was like I
[372]
don't care about anything they're like
[374]
you're you're promoted oh yeah sure you
[376]
know I mean yeah yeah that's what read
[377]
it there's a connection they all right
[381]
in this next one I'm gonna let you take
[384]
it away Josh so there's a great site
[387]
called Moyers & Company it's Bill Moyers
[389]
website and there they pull a little bit
[393]
of the Utne reader sometimes they go
[395]
around and read articles in the
[396]
alternative press sure and they
[398]
republished a article that was
[400]
originally in yes magazine is that with
[403]
all caps with an exclamation point
[405]
and yes magazine ran a an article by
[409]
wealthy wealthy wealthy entrepreneur
[412]
named Nick
[413]
our yeah and Nick Hanauer runs a little
[417]
more toward the the Bill Gates side of
[421]
billionaire ISM where he says maybe
[425]
income inequality isn't the greatest
[427]
thing ever and as a matter of fact he
[428]
took his position to write this article
[431]
for yes magazine to say this whole $15
[434]
an hour minimum wage idea is a good idea
[439]
it's what we should do at a minimum
[441]
sorry for the pun and he said if you
[444]
hear any business owner that says I
[446]
can't afford it don't buy it yeah and he
[449]
makes a pretty good point he goes
[451]
McDonald's has far higher costs in
[454]
Seattle where he lives
[456]
sure and it doesn't say Alabama yeah and
[458]
yet McDonald's are doing great in both
[460]
places yeah I wonder about the small
[462]
business but I read an article the other
[465]
day that basically said small businesses
[467]
will just raise their prices right to
[468]
cover the wage increase sure consumed
[470]
passing along the cost to the consumer
[471]
right but remember pennies per product
[475]
right I mean if they do it honestly yeah
[478]
you remember when Obamacare was passed
[480]
there were a lot of companies that said
[483]
well fine I'm gonna text you my customer
[485]
and pass along they caught the added
[488]
cost of Obamacare right and I think most
[491]
people were like fine yeah or if they're
[493]
not fine
[494]
with it then they just stopped going
[495]
there right so it still does seem to
[498]
work out in this hanauer's point but
[500]
ultimately his point is it's it's it's
[502]
twofold it's that if somebody says we
[505]
can't afford a fifteen dollar minimum
[506]
wage you call BS on them okay and then
[510]
secondly his point is is that we need a
[513]
fifteen dollar minimum wage at least
[515]
because despite the idea that
[517]
trickle-down economics that if you if
[519]
you make the the people at the top super
[521]
wealthy yeah they create jobs he's
[523]
saying basic economic principles reveal
[526]
that to boost be in utter lie yeah in a
[528]
capitalistic country in capital right
[530]
this he's not talking at all about
[532]
socialism is saying and in capitalism
[534]
pure capitalism like Adam Smithian
[536]
capitalism yeah it's the middle the
[539]
middle supports everything else yeah and
[541]
you can just look at our tax base it's
[543]
the people at the middle that are
[544]
squeezed the most are supporting those
[545]
who have the least
[546]
and they're also covering those who have
[548]
the most who have the money to pay
[550]
accountants to get out of paying real
[552]
taxes yeah of course it's the middle
[554]
that supports everything else so Nick
[556]
ham hours point is invest in the middle
[559]
and the rest of the economy will do
[561]
great yeah and you do that by raising
[563]
the minimum wage rather than this weird
[566]
model that we're in now we're
[568]
productivities through the roof so wages
[570]
aren't climbing at all right and he's
[572]
saying like if you if the people in the
[574]
middle have money then they go out and
[576]
support the economy they spend that
[578]
money well he makes two really
[579]
interesting points to me one is low wage
[581]
workers stuck on a path to poverty are
[583]
not only weak customers in other words
[585]
not buying stuff they're anemic
[586]
taxpayers absent citizens and
[588]
inattentive neighbors yeah give them a
[592]
job where they can work one job one not
[595]
three jobs to support their family yeah
[597]
and they might volunteer they might
[598]
invest in their children and their
[599]
education sure and the other point he
[601]
makes boy this is a good one an economic
[605]
arrangement that pays a wall street
[606]
worker tens of millions of dollars per
[608]
year for high frequency trading and pays
[610]
tens of thousands to workers who grow
[612]
and serve our food build our homes
[614]
educate our children and risk our lives
[616]
to protect this firefighters police
[618]
officers yeah isn't an expression of
[620]
true value of economic necessity of
[623]
these jobs it simply reflects a
[624]
difference in bargaining power and
[626]
status exactly we need teachers we need
[629]
firemen we don't pay him squat
[632]
The Wall Street guy makes tens of
[633]
millions of dollars it doesn't mean this
[635]
job is any more important it's just
[637]
where he ended up in life or she sure it
[639]
right and and you can also make the case
[641]
that it's actually in a lot of cases
[643]
harmful to the economy those jobs very
[646]
interesting it is extremely interesting
[648]
so and I mean there's probably people
[650]
rocking in you know their seat on the
[652]
Delta flight right now this is going
[654]
absolutely nuts settle down
[656]
calm down yes we're not communists we're
[658]
not socialists it has nothing to do with
[661]
conservative or Republican or Democrat
[664]
or anything like that like we're talking
[667]
about economic theory here yeah building
[670]
a prosperous nation that works for
[671]
everyone right so just return your seat
[674]
back to its upright position
[675]
enjoy your flight recline it a little
[678]
bit
[678]
you know yeah and and yeah plutocrats
[681]
and kleptocrats ripoff everyone not just
[685]
socialists or Democrats or the left I
[687]
think that's a great parting shot so
[691]
good day everyone and we'll see you next
[692]
time on internet roundup
