what's up everyone it's Kenji here and in this聽 video i want to break down a day in the life聽聽

of a goldman sachs intern so just to give some聽 context i previously worked a goldman sachs in聽聽

their investment banking division in new york city聽 so that's what the day in the life is going to be聽聽

about as for the internship itself it was about聽 10 weeks long and i've also made some videos on聽聽

and leave them up here now before we get into聽 a day in the life i do want to mention that聽聽

a goldman sachs within their investment banking聽 division there's actually a split between advisory聽聽
[30]
and financing so an advisory these are things聽 like m a activism defense restructuring whilst聽聽

what's called financing has to do with structure聽 finance leverage finance equity offerings other聽聽
[42]
things like that so basically financing is more聽 tied to the financial markets meaning that they聽聽
[46]
do have to come a bit earlier and finish maybe聽 a bit earlier than those in advisory so for the聽聽
[51]
work hours they're actually fairly similar between聽 the two about 16 hour days more or less for junior聽聽

people but that said if i had to pick one probably聽 advisory works a slight bit more right all right聽聽

so let's get into the day in the life on average聽 i'd say it was around 15 to 16 hours that i worked聽聽

every day that said because i was on the financing聽 side i did come in slightly earlier at around聽聽

7 15 7 30 all the way to around 11 30 and聽 obviously take a couple breaks here and聽聽

there to grab coffee or have lunch or dinner if聽 i wasn't too busy say all right so let's get into聽聽

the details of what actually happens during a 16聽 hour day so i typically would aim to get up around聽聽

6 30 and by 7 15 i did aim to be at the office聽 i only had a short commute because i was living聽聽

in a student dorm so that was fairly convenient聽 and i'll try to get a grab a snack along the way聽聽

then at 7 15 to around 8 30 this was time for me聽 to catch up on my emails and then start to do some聽聽

research as i had a presentation every morning at聽 8 30 which we actually alternated between interns聽聽

it was essentially a market update right so it was聽 basically in front of the whole team and we had to聽聽

debrief them on a couple things that had happened聽 the night prior or what to expect during the day聽聽

so it would take me about an hour to聽 actually find the relevant news and typically聽聽

i would do it on bloomberg if you haven't聽 heard it's called the bloomberg terminal聽聽

and that's basically the financial news platform聽 that everyone uses it's really pricey it does cost聽聽

around 24 000 a year it's a subscription-based聽 model but basically they have all of the necessary聽聽

financial information there and if they're willing聽 to pay that much then it's obviously very valuable聽聽

and there i would look at things like how the聽 interest rates have moved because that's going to聽聽

affect the different types of things like equities聽 bonds derivatives not just in the us but also聽聽

in other markets where we might be working then聽 something else might be political things right so聽聽

for instance if there's an election happening at聽 a certain point i do want to try to mention that聽聽

and see how that might affect the markets聽 it's really a proper debrief that might last聽聽

anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes it's essentially聽 from 8 30 to 8 45 and there's a q a after it聽聽

so between 8 45 and 9 i would try to grab a聽 coffee and basically just get myself ready for聽聽

the day so between 9 and 11 i would usually聽 be on my desk and actually get started with聽聽

the work that i might have and just to give you a聽 bit of background basically within the investment聽聽

banking division there's different hierarchies聽 obviously the summer analyst is at the very聽聽
[190]
bottom me in this case then after you get the聽 analyst then you get what's called an associate聽聽
[195]
then a vice president and lastly a managing聽 director and then there's partners and others but聽聽

that usually we didn't really see them so md was聽 usually the person the highest person that we saw聽聽

as you can imagine there's a lot less empties聽 than there are analysts right that makes sense聽聽

so basically most of the interactions i had were聽 with analysts and associates so for instance i聽聽

would have a powerpoint ready for the analyst聽 and he would give me a couple corrections which聽聽

i would then take on during that time and try to聽 make the changes and they might be things like聽聽

hey instead of putting a pie chart here let's try聽 a column chart because that's probably going to be聽聽

more a better representation of the data or hey聽 make sure you check this number again it doesn't聽聽

quite look right to me and other things聽 like that mainly kind of combining excel聽聽

and powerpoint and let's say that on a good day聽 i'll just be able to actually do the work but聽聽

sometimes because basically everyone on top聽 of me is my boss if you're a summer analyst聽聽

there's all sorts of things that come up and聽 people might ask some for some urgent help last聽聽

minute before their meeting at 12 or something and聽 so it's not always that smooth see and between 11聽聽
[255]
and 12 i'll usually get on some internal calls聽 with some of the senior bunkers where basically聽聽
[260]
they'd be talking about what's called a live聽 deal so a deal that's ongoing at the moment聽聽

where they might be getting some help from the聽 research team and kind of seeing the economic聽聽
[268]
forecasts and what that's looking like or talking聽 with people from other offices right like say the聽聽
[273]
san francisco office to see if they have any聽 any previous work with this client and how聽聽
[278]
they can pass that on to us and it can be of聽 help to us it's really kind of communicating聽聽

and seeing what's up but on the whole as for the聽 what the intern does the intern doesn't really do聽聽

anything you just listen you don't necessarily聽 participate at most maybe the analyst calls me聽聽

up and says hey check the share price of this聽 and tell them or something like that but it's聽聽

really minimal participation what you're actually聽 expected to do as an intern is just to take notes聽聽

so you just take notes of the meeting and聽 ideally you want to have them ready that聽聽

when the meeting is over you send them up as say聽 some kind of a debrief for the meeting so once the聽聽

meeting's over between 12 and 1 here's basically聽 where i'm supposed to summarize the email and send聽聽

it out so that maybe takes me half an hour to do聽 and then usually after a meeting they might say聽聽

all right let's meet again at this time or let's聽 try to get in touch with this other department聽聽

so basically i'd be in charge of that more of like聽 admin stuff if you will and if i have some spare聽聽

time i'll obviously be working on some of my other聽 projects right so between 1 and 1 30 i just put聽聽

lunch for now um to be honest that varies a lot聽 lunch time varies a lot depending on your workload聽聽

whether you have meetings and other things like聽 that at my worst sometimes i couldn't really eat聽聽

so i would eat around three or four but usually i聽 would try to get some food in between 1 and 1 30.聽聽

and i'll just go down to the cafeteria they had聽 which was a couple floors down and just get food聽聽

to go so i'd actually just eat it in front of聽 my desk i know it sounds a bit depressing but聽聽

that's pretty much what everyone did at least聽 everyone on my level so i thought it was just聽聽

a normal thing to do so as you can see there's no聽 fancy champagne parties or anything like that no聽聽

waffle wall street kind of stuff or maybe i聽 just wasn't invited but you know so between 130聽聽

and 330 is when i actually get the edits done so聽 suppose the analyst previously told me to change聽聽

that that slide to something a bit different maybe聽 change those graphs and double check the numbers聽聽

so that's what i would do and basically this聽 time i would pass it on to the analyst the聽聽

analyst would say it's okay then it would go up聽 the latter to the associate maybe the associate聽聽

has some comments maybe he says it's okay or she聽 and then move it up even higher to the vp and see聽聽

what they have to say if it's all good that's that聽 but usually there's some comments so it goes back聽聽

falls back down to me and i have to make some聽 other minor changes before i can send them back up聽聽

there's a lot of going back and forth between the聽 different people in the hierarchy and between 3 30聽聽

and 4 30 there might be a client meeting and this聽 is fairly ordinary as in it happens maybe they聽聽

have a call every two weeks or something like聽 that and usually on goldman's side it would be聽聽

the associate the analyst and myself and we'd聽 be talking to the clients seeing how it's going聽聽

um how the proposals coming up coming along and聽 other things like that so really just kind of a聽聽

checkup in a way and as for what i was doing there聽 well you guessed it i was just taking notes taking聽聽

notes debriefing and maybe looking up a number if聽 it's really necessary but it wasn't usually the聽聽

case so just as the meeting ended i'll typically聽 have a 15-minute coffee chat set up so basically聽聽

my bossa goldman told me that i had to have coffee聽 with everyone in my team so that obviously took a聽聽

while so every day i would ideally try to have聽 coffee with someone just to get to know them聽聽
[452]
and essentially build a bit of a culture and yeah聽 just get to know everyone in the team it was a bit聽聽

awkward to ask at first but i realized that it's聽 something that everyone does in investment banks聽聽
[461]
so um why would i do differently right so between聽 4 30 and 7 30 typically the big meetings were done聽聽
[468]
for the day so basically i could focus on some聽 of the things that did require a bit more say聽聽

thinking so for instance it would be things like聽 creating an excel model template or for instance聽聽
[478]
updating a model say the previous month did the聽 market research and they needed it updated for聽聽
[483]
this month to send to a client so i would do聽 that other things like that that did actually聽聽

require a bit of thinking and they did use a bit聽 of my background in finance and accounting right聽聽

and then towards 7 pm you start to get your聽 hopes up you feel like you're doing well with聽聽

your project and you might be able to leave the聽 office around 10. that usually wasn't the case too聽聽

so between 7 30 and 8 i would typically聽 have dinner the cafeteria would actually聽聽
[506]
be closed for dinner so i actually had to聽 go to the shopping mall right in front and聽聽
[510]
that's usually where i would grab grab some food聽 in the food court and i'll bring it back to the聽聽

office eat in front of my desk again but this聽 time around the markets are already closed and聽聽

some of the more senior people like say the聽 managing directors are usually gone so it's聽聽
[523]
a bit more of a relaxed environment to eat than聽 you can actually chat with your colleagues say聽聽

just after dinner between say 8 and 11 30 that's聽 when you're finishing up all your tasks that have聽聽

actually been postponed throughout the day because聽 people had asked you for favor say some might be聽聽

things like actually replying to the emails聽 um updating the powerpoint or the excel model聽聽
[544]
other things like that and that's also typically聽 when an analyst who's really the analyst and the聽聽
[549]
associates are mainly the people that are left聽 after say 10 pm they're the ones that might ask聽聽

you for a favor they just say hey are you busy by聽 the way and well you have to be polite you're the聽聽

intern so you just say yeah what's up and they'll聽 usually just give you some more work sometimes you聽聽

can reject them but on the whole they don't really聽 recommend it as well it doesn't look good on you聽聽

right so that's also when the dream of leaving the聽 office by 10 pm quickly fades so at around 11 30聽聽

i'll do a final round of just checking if anyone聽 needs help with anything if i'm already finished聽聽

with my work uh there's typically a couple聽 analysts left from my group so i would ask them聽聽

and for the most part they would just say go聽 home man it's already late or something like that聽聽

which was appreciated but other times they would聽 say yeah actually i need this it's pressing for聽聽

tomorrow can you stay around so i would obviously聽 um at my worst i think i had to come in one day at聽聽

around 6 30 in the morning and i didn't finish聽 till around 2 30. so that was really my most聽聽

worked day but for the most part it wasn't that聽 bad sometimes i even got to leave earlier like say聽聽

around 10 right so in a normal scenario聽 at 11 30 i would be walking back home聽聽

goldman did offer a free taxi service but because聽 i live so close by and i actually wanted to get聽聽

some fresh air for once i would usually just walk聽 back home then i'd sleep and the next day i do聽聽

the same thing over again for weekends usually on聽 saturdays i wasn't allowed to go into the office聽聽

that's a goldman intern policy apparently and then聽 for sundays i would usually be back at the office聽聽

usually doing anything from 6 hours to 14 hours聽 something along those lines so that's a day in聽聽

the life as an intern in new york city take it as聽 a bit of a rough guide because it obviously varies聽聽
[644]
depending on how much work the the team has but聽 it also depends on location right so for instance聽聽
[648]
new york or london there's some of the bigger聽 financial cities so they always have some work聽聽
[653]
to do well if you go to some other smaller cities聽 there's obviously not going to be quite as much聽聽
[658]
work right also the workload does depend a lot on聽 your division so the investment banking division聽聽
[663]
is notorious for having some of the worst working聽 hours while say others like asset management are聽聽
[668]
usually somewhat more chill if you will so聽 yeah that's the end of the video i hope you聽聽
