Channel: unknown
[1]
China is no stranger to record-breaking
[5]
infrastructure projects already home to
[9]
the world's largest dam longest ocean
[12]
crossing and most extensive high-speed
[15]
rail network the country has now
[17]
completed one of the largest airports
[19]
ever conceived
[22]
[Music]
[27]
home to one of the world's largest
[29]
economies the demand for air travel in
[32]
and out of China is extreme as the
[36]
nation's center of political power and
[39]
as the second largest city in a country
[41]
of more than 1.3 billion people the
[44]
pressure on Beijing is particularly
[47]
intense plans for a second International
[52]
Airport were first proposed in 2008
[54]
while the existing Beijing Capital
[57]
International was undergoing a 3.5
[60]
billion US dollar expansion ahead of the
[62]
Summer Olympic Games despite these works
[67]
forecasts predicted that even with its
[69]
expansion to cater for 83 million
[72]
passengers annually the airport would
[74]
exceed its capacity within just a few
[76]
years at the extension being completed
[79]
sure enough the facility reached
[82]
capacity in 2012 and by 2016 more than a
[87]
hundred million passengers were
[88]
travelling through the airport each year
[91]
[Music]
[93]
to alleviate pressure and safeguard
[95]
Beijing's economic growth a new hub was
[98]
conceived with initial proposals
[101]
suggesting nine runways and capacity for
[104]
200 million passengers each year the
[107]
vast dashing International was
[109]
originally intended to replace Beijing
[111]
capital as the city's main airport
[115]
however in 2014 the decision was taken
[119]
to operate both facilities
[121]
simultaneously and to scale back the new
[124]
airport's design initially constructed
[127]
with four runways and capacity for 72
[131]
million passengers each year dashing
[133]
international can be expanded to seven
[135]
runways and could serve up to a hundred
[138]
million passengers annually when fully
[140]
developed plans for the new airport were
[144]
released by Zaha Hadid Architects in
[146]
early 2015
[148]
collaborating with Airport specialists a
[151]
dpi on the main terminal building Hadid
[154]
moved away from the linear model of
[156]
airport design which often created
[158]
sprawling facilities and instead
[160]
introduced a six-pointed star
[162]
arrangement that puts passengers less
[164]
than 600 meters around an eight minute
[166]
walk from any departure gate
[170]
while one arm of the building operates
[172]
as an administrative center the
[174]
remaining 5 accommodate the airport's 79
[177]
departure gates dashing international
[186]
incorporates a number of high speed rail
[189]
and Metro links to Beijing and the
[191]
surrounding provinces the airport will
[197]
have a dedicated stop on the new Beijing
[199]
jung-an intercity railway placing it
[202]
just 20 minutes from Beijing
[204]
while the intercity railway connector
[206]
will provide a direct link to Beijing
[208]
Capital International and neighbouring
[210]
regions there will also be a link to the
[213]
city's subway system
[216]
while many airport links around the
[218]
world deliver passengers to the
[220]
outskirts of facilities the numerous
[222]
connections to dashing international
[224]
will arrive beneath the terminal
[226]
enabling direct access to the departure
[229]
levels in order to withstand the
[233]
vibrations caused by high-speed trains
[236]
that can travel up to 250 km/h beneath
[240]
the terminal in an active seismic zone
[242]
1000 anti-seismic isolation barriers
[245]
were built into the terminals ground
[247]
floor slab allowing the structure to
[249]
withstand an earthquake with a magnitude
[251]
of eight on the Richter scale with a
[255]
hundred ninety seven thousand passengers
[258]
expected to use the airport each day
[260]
dashing international will operate a
[263]
largely paperless system that features
[265]
AI facial recognition at check-in
[268]
self-service bag drop facilities and
[270]
real-time that mobile baggage tracking
[274]
it will also be the first airport in the
[277]
world to operate vertically stacked dual
[279]
departure and arrival flaws this
[282]
approach enables faster check-in and
[285]
security screenings while significantly
[287]
reducing the distances that passengers
[289]
travel between connecting flights
[295]
[Music]
[297]
extending for over a million square
[300]
meters
[301]
dashing internationals terminal building
[303]
is one of the single largest structures
[306]
ever built formed from over 1.6 million
[310]
cubic meters of concrete and some 52,000
[314]
tons of steel the building integrates
[316]
photovoltaic panels and rainwater
[318]
harvesting systems across its vast
[321]
undulating roof reaching practical
[326]
completion in 2018 the first flight
[328]
inspections took place in January 2019
[331]
while finishing touches were made to the
[333]
terminal buildings interior
[336]
while the airport offers many of the
[338]
retail dining and entertainment options
[340]
found in most hubs dashing International
[343]
will also feature an interactive pet
[346]
hotel childcare and nursery facilities
[348]
and hybrid online retail and dining
[351]
experiences for passengers
[355]
meanwhile on the runways aircraft taking
[358]
off and landing will be protected from
[360]
birds or civilian drones by an Israeli
[363]
AI software monitoring system the entire
[369]
airport cost almost 12 billion US
[372]
dollars to deliver while this makes it
[374]
easily one of the world's largest
[376]
construction projects it is notably less
[379]
than the projected at 17 billion u.s.
[381]
dollars required to construct a third
[383]
runway at London Heathrow
[387]
having now completed its operational
[390]
testing dashing International is set to
[392]
welcome its first flight on the 30th of
[395]
September 2019 less than five years
[398]
since construction works began if you
