Why A Controversial Change Has The Internet Angry at Logan Paul, Youtube, and More... - YouTube

Channel: Philip DeFranco

Sup you beautiful bastards, hope you had a fantastic Wednesday
[2]
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show and let's just jump into this thing
[6]
the first thing we're gonna talk about today by far
[8]
The most requested story of the day today are
[10]
the massive YouTube changes affecting tons of small creators on this site has been so much
[15]
Outrage people have been getting stripped of their ability to monetize their videos
[18]
So let's talk about what's happening
[21]
so when the before times in the long long ago YouTube was at a point where they were like
[23]
Hey, we have all these ads you want to put ads on your video you want to make money?
[26]
Let's do business
[27]
It really wasn't hard to join the partner program get ads on your video
[27]
then in April of 2017
[31]
YouTube said ok we have requirements you have to have
[34]
10,000 lifetime views on this channel
[36]
you got those 10,000 views and you qualify to join the monetization program
[39]
But as of last night YouTube changed the requirements to just be eligible for the partner program
[44]
You have to have a thousand subscribers on your channel in
[47]
4000 hours of watch time over the past twelve months also a note here
[50]
There's been some confusion around what is watch time there have been people saying I have to upload four thousand hours of no
[55]
That's not I use yesterday's video as an example that video was 12 minutes 32 seconds if someone watches the entire thing
[60]
That's 12 minutes 32 seconds towards the total so if I did some rough not exact math I would mean
[66]
19,000 200 people to watch that video in full to qualify that said something to consider not every youtubers videos are as long as mine
[72]
Also, you shouldn't expect your entire audience to have a 100% watch through rate or make short form animated content
[77]
It's a minute if you're gonna need a lot more views to qualify. You don't have to get all the views on one video
[81]
It's it's the entire archive for the past 12 months, so depending on the kind of Creator
[85]
You are the requirement as far as hours going to affect you differently as far as YouTube's reasoning for these changes
[90]
They wrote in the blog post
[90]
we've arrived at these new thresholds after thorough analysis and conversations with creators like you it will allow us to significantly improve our ability to
[96]
identify
[97]
Creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them and away from bad actors these higher standards will also
[103]
help us prevent potentially inappropriate videos from
[105]
Monetizing which can hurt revenue for everyone now that specific line made it so a lot of people thought that this was logan Paul's fault
[111]
If you're even remotely paying attention to YouTube you know that there's been mass
[114]
Controversy and outrage against Logan Paul these past few weeks both because he was very
[117]
disrespectful to Japan and the people in Japan as well as also showing a dead body in a video and a thumbnail and giving a
[123]
douchey apology before giving a seemingly sincere
[126]
Apology this specific move isn't because of Logan Paul this specific move and change is due to three factors the first due to the ad
[132]
pocalypse
[132]
1.0 extremist content propaganda videos being monetized Media beat up YouTube over this advertisers pulled their money most likely remember second part was ad pocalypse
[141]
3.0
[141]
Or as I refer to it as the kid pocalypse all those disgusting and weird
[145]
Channels that were geared towards children showing them incredibly inappropriate stuff that we're getting ad money and finally three
[151]
copycat channel their channels dedicated to stealing and mimicking the content of larger youtubers and Vedas Vedas get to make that ad money and so
[158]
to me it appears that YouTube had two shitty choices to make one keep things as they word continue to get hammered both by the
[164]
community and the media or to raise the minimum requirements to join the YouTube Partner Program
[168]
So they have enough eyes to make sure that the content that they are going to put ads on is not stolen cons that is
[174]
Non extremist content is not inappropriate towards children, but shown to be some sort of cartoon content
[179]
And I'll say to you what I said to them when they asked me what I thought about these changes about a week ago
[183]
I personally get it, but there is going to be a ton of backlash especially because there's one main thing
[188]
This is where there's the most outrage and controversy
[191]
No, channel was grandfathered in so channels that met the previous requirement that no longer hit this new requirement
[197]
They're kicked out of the partner program, and that has been seen by a lot of people in the community as an overcorrection
[202]
They're not just changing the size of the doorway into the program
[205]
They're kicking people out so understandably people are freaking out when they're getting an email from
[208]
YouTube over the past 24 hours saying you're no longer eligible if you don't have these requirements you're gonna lose access February 20th now YouTube
[214]
Defends this in the blog post saying people have until February 20th 2018
[218]
It's a 30-day grace period and while these changes will affect a significant number of channels 99% of those affected were making less than
[223]
$100 per year in the last year with 90% earning less than two dollars fifty cents in the last month and so to this I
[229]
Say, I understand where YouTube is coming from the thing I think YouTube's not considering is one via Adsense
[235]
You can't get paid out unless you have $100 the question becomes how many of that 99 percent we're getting close to
[240]
$100 ready to get their first paycheck now. They're getting kicked back because this is such a massive change
[245]
I would personally ask YouTube to figure out how they could pay out the Adsense that had not been paid yet even if they didn't
[250]
hit that $100 threshold since they have now changed the footing for that youtuber as far as changes that were affected by Logan Paul we
[257]
Could look to the Google preferred changes that of course Google's program for just super
[261]
Top-tier advertiser YouTube announcing an increased vetting process for these videos saying every video is submitted for Google
[266]
Her dad's must be watched by a human moderator and manually approved his family-friendly content right so that change is the Logan Paul change
[273]
They're like, okay
[274]
We got to put a human body on this to make sure Logan Paul is not showing another dead body because I don't want all
[278]
These small creators just to feel left completely abandoned right now
[281]
I'm gonna give out free advice whether you're a large creator or more importantly, or a small creator
[285]
You need to look at other sources of revenue. It's something that I preached for years and years and years
[288]
We can't always count on drunk stepdaddy YouTube to be looking out for us. It's a long term
[293]
You need to figure out ways to make money on YouTube not necessarily from YouTube
[296]
Let's say you're not eligible for the YouTube Partner Program under these new rules you have under a thousand subscribers
[301]
Maybe your videos are getting 500
[302]
800 views on that video where you're getting less than a thousand views YouTube is giving you most likely a
[307]
dollar or less you set up a patreon and only 1% of your audience signs up you're got 800 views that still eight people and
[313]
All of a sudden you're making more on
[315]
Patreon than on YouTube also go to teespring and just just put the name of your channel on a shirt same concept if you can
[320]
Get 1% of your audience to convert on that audience that if you put out four videos in a month that you're de Maynes less
[325]
Than most likely four dollars, you can get just 1% eight people to buy a shirt to price it out properly
[330]
That's around eighty dollars that month. I've been where you are every dollar matters at that point
[334]
I mean when I started making videos after it got past the hobby point there wasn't even a partner program at that time
[339]
That's not me trying to take away from people being hit today, but it's why I've always been up this mindset
[343]
there are also so many other ways just coming out that you can make new money and people can support other creators one of the
[348]
Things I'm most excited about especially since the crypto markets getting slammed over the past 36 hours
[353]
They even the basic attention token brave is they're fantastic browser
[356]
It's blocking ads it's blocking Annoying
[358]
Malware scripts all the shitty stuff built into that bad ass browser based on what you actually watch on YouTube or blogs you read you
[365]
Can support creators you just go into the settings and you say I want to give this amount to the creators that I walked way
[370]
I oversimplify it to my friends
[371]
It's essentially like YouTube bread
[373]
But you can choose if you want your money to go to someone or not because you can do these monthly payouts based on what?
[377]
You actually watch, or there's someone listed you don't like hit that trashcan
[380]
If there's someone you want to pay no matter how much you actually want you hit that pin
[384]
And then you enter in the percentage you want them to get every month
[386]
And that's it and what's also awesome today. They announced that if you go to brave calm slash million you get brave for desktop
[391]
You'll receive a new basic attention token grants about
[394]
$5 no cost to you and boom you can start supporting creators and sites that you like and you can look at this as one
[399]
Of two things I'm personally the mindset of the long term
[401]
This is the future or if you're a greater small or large
[404]
You can tell your audience about it have them sign up
[406]
They get like the five dollars a bag of them hit the pen type and 100 percent on your channel boom just one person from
[412]
Your audience does that you're getting more value than that
[414]
Hypothetical channel we were talking about earlier with eight hundred subs would get from an entire month also
[418]
I advise creators big and small to sign up get their verified accounts on brave. That's a second link
[423]
I'll include in the description. Also the people signing up getting that five dollars in tokens
[426]
I'm saying do not give that to me
[428]
I highly recommend
[429]
Specifically targeting small creators that are being hit by this and just trying to make it in general finally two notes for transparency sake one
[436]
this is not a
[437]
sponsorship with bat
[439]
I was trying to negotiate a deal with them because
[441]
Any time I can I can take something that's helping community and also benefit
[444]
Greatly just by like in this moment is incredibly important to get the word out into and I find it incredibly important for people to
[449]
Mention this when they're talking about anything in this world, I'm not personally advising anyone buy or sell
[454]
I personally have basic attention token arises it follows that benefit and lose based on what happens in the markup any point
[460]
Hopefully some of that helps you guys out on their grind with all event said I passed a question off to you
[464]
Do you think that this makes sense long term or no you think this is just a massive?
[469]
Overcorrection of screwing over their little YouTube loving your thoughts where you're coming from maybe how it's affected you personally

[542]
Links is always there in the description down below and in hell has frozen
[546]
Over news North and South Korea have agreed to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games
[551]
Under one flag and in fact. They'll have a joint women's ice hockey team
[554]
This is wild considering the general
[556]
Relationship between North and South Korea as well as the last two years of communication which was essentially not much
[562]
We talked about it recently
[563]
It was just massive news that North Korea was finally opening up again to South Korea for the first time in two years and in
[568]
total the North plans on sending a delegation
[570]
cheering squad
[571]
Taekwondo demonstrators and officials to the Olympic and additionally the two Koreas will train
[575]
skiers together and while the South Korean president was
[578]
Praising this news saying I believe it will be a great opportunity to thaw the South North Korea relationship
[582]
That is frozen solid well that is what he is saying there are others that are not so happy Japanese foreign minister taro kono said
[588]
It is not the time to ease pressure or to reward North Korea the fact that North Korea is engaging in dialogue could be interpreted
[594]
as proof that the sanctions are working and also the situation is not a done deal yet the
[598]
IOC has to have a meeting on this the IOC issuing the statement we are sure that the two Korean
[602]
Delegations will present their ideas and proposals at the meeting on Saturday
[605]
This will enable the IOC to carefully evaluate the consequences and the potential impact on the Olympic Games and the Olympic competition
[611]
There's also the question of how this would work because of the sanctions on North Korea
[615]
And so it'll be interesting to see what happens with that meeting on Saturday
[618]
And I will say personally I'm conflicted on this matter. I mean I like it because of conversation can de-escalate a potentially catastrophic
[625]
Situation fantastic at the same time working with the North Korea is that normalizing and essentially saying what you're doing is okay?
[631]
What are the potential long-term effects that and then I'll pass the question off to you
[634]
Or do you like this move or you think this is ridiculous, and then let's talk about this USA Gymnastics mckayla maroney chrissy teigen
[640]
Situation you most likely remember in October of last year mckayla maroney comes forward as one of the over 100 women who had been sexually
[646]
assaulted by former USA gymnastic dr
[648]
Larry nosov and a Tsar has already been sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges for child pornography in December
[655]
He's also pled guilty to ten counts of first degree criminal sexual assault in two
[658]
Michigan Court the Tsar's latest sentencing hearing began on Tuesday this week and around 20 of his victims have spoken out against him
[664]
The prosecutor is 98 of his 125 victims are expected to address the court this week
[668]
but news came out that Maroni was not expected to be one of them and the reason for that was because
[672]
mckayla maroney had reportedly signed a nondisclosure agreement as part of a settlement with USA Gymnastics in
[677]
2016 according to maroney's attorney that NDA stated that if she said anything about a czars abuse she could be fined
[683]
$100,000 or more and that probably sounds familiar because we talked about in December that a lawsuit was filed against USA
[688]
Gymnastics that lawsuit alleging that they illegally saw to buy her silence as part of a
[692]
1.25 million dollar settlement this in order to allow that monster
[695]
Nassar to leave quietly the lawsuit argues that Moroni was coerced into signing this agreement because she needed money for counseling counseling
[701]
That was necessary because she was trying to deal with the abuse
[703]
She received by an assault on that now USA
[705]
Gymnastics claimed that her former lawyer brought up the idea of the NDA it wasn't their idea no matter what we're talking about a situation
[710]
Where a young girl who was abused it had an NDA in a contract she signed to not talk about that abuse to me personally
[717]
That's disgusting and that's just a stain that won't go away as far as USA Gymnastics
[721]
But then this week in walks in model Chrissy Teigen and she brought new attention to all of this by tweeting out a headline about
[725]
The NDA and writing the entire principle of this should be fought an NDA to stay quiet about this serial monster with over
[731]
140 accusers, and I would be absolutely honored to pay this fine for you Makayla TV producer Michael Schur responding
[737]
I'll split it with you Kristen Bell saying all one-third it with you guys
[740]
And then mckayla maroney ended up responding to all of this through her attorney saying not on social media right now
[745]
But I wish I was for this
[746]
I'm shocked by your generosity, and I just want you to know how much hope your words bring to all of us
[750]
I just can't get over the fact that someone
[751]
I don't personally know is sticking up for me let alone a strong woman that I've looked up to for years. Thank You Chrissy
[756]
You're so inspiring and things are starting to change because of people like you just saying that was worth the decision to speak up regardless
[761]
of a fine and then late Tuesday night USA
[763]
Gymnastics responded USA Gymnastics is not sought and will not seek any money for mckayla maroney for her brave statements made in describing her
[770]
victimization and abuse by larry nosov or for any victim impact statement
[773]
She wants to make - Larry nazar at this hearing or at any subsequent
[776]
Hearings related to the sentences this has been her write and USA Gymnastics encourages Makayla and anyone who has been abused to speak out USA
[782]
Gymnastics remains focused on our highest priority safety health and well-being of our athletes and creating a culture that empowers and supports them and so
[788]
That's the situation as it is today now. We'll mckayla maroney go to court and speak out
[793]
We don't know but for me personally this just feels like USA Gymnastics trying to repair their
[797]
It's hard to forget that not only did they bring the sky on and apparently nobody knew anything?
[802]
Despite the massive number of young girls. He was doing this to that even after he was no longer with us a gymnastics
[808]
They didn't warn anyone else despite secretly working with authorities during that time
[813]
We know Larry nazar was still abusing young girls in a situation where they signed a contract with a young girl that had an NDA
[819]
That said we would find you if you talked about this for USA
[822]
Gymnastics to act like they're even part of a positive movement instead of what the problem was it's ridiculous. It's disgusting
[828]
I'm glad people with the megaphone are using and then let's talk about a real-life spy story that we have today
[833]
This is story that actually starts in 2010 2010 the Obama
[836]
Administration and the CIA began noticing that assets informants and agents are going missing in China first
[841]
They assume that this is just normal attrition
[842]
Intelligence assets come and go they're caught and killed on occasion then the CIA really starts to freak out a they realize it's more than
[848]
Just one or two agents the Chinese have seemingly caught on to the CIA's operations
[852]
They begin to dismantle the USA's operations in China at an alarming rate reportedly from 2010
[856]
2012 between 18 to 20 assets were killed or caught by the Chinese the CIA won't admit how many assets are in China
[862]
But it's widely considered to be nearly the entire
[864]
amount of agents in Beijing and some of those killed were killed in a dramatic fashion their reports that Chinese counterintelligence
[870]
Officials went to a Chinese government building where a CIA informant?
[873]
work and gunned him down right in front of others as a message to others who might have been working for the CIA and of
[878]
those found by the Chinese at least
[880]
12-hour believed to have been killed so the CIA and the FBI who they work closely with when it comes to catching leaks
[885]
counterintelligence they all begin panicking lost so many agents and informants in China could take years to rebuild there's also the question of how is
[891]
This happen at first it was assumed the Chinese managed to crack the encryption on CIA messages to operatives in China cuts by the end
[897]
Of 2012 it was clear that there was a mole so both the FBI and the CIA
[900]
Began to shrink down the list of potential suspects, and then they landed on Jerry Cheung Shing Li
[905]
Jerry was a 53 year old former CIA employee left when his career plateaued was a naturalized US citizen and worked for the CIA between
[912]
1994 and 2007 in 2007 he left for a business opportunity in Hong Kong
[917]
I'm here believe that I was set up by the Chinese government from there
[919]
There are records that he returned with his family in 2012 for a trip to Virginia during his stays and stops at hotels the FBI
[925]
Searched his belongings in secret. They ended up finding two handwritten note books
[928]
They described as an address book and a date book reportedly those
[931]
books ended up containing
[932]
Secret and top secret information about the CIA and its operations in China this including true names of operatives phone numbers in their locations
[939]
So then in 2013 the FBI and the CIA make up this situation to get mr.
[943]
Li to go to an interview offer him a possible contract with the CIA
[945]
This is a common thing among former employees during the five interviews between May and June they tried to fish
[950]
Information about his travels and business in China during this he never reveals his secret. No books
[954]
He defends his reason for moving to China
[956]
He ultimately ends up not getting arrested, and it's unclear why the FBI seemingly knew he had unlawfully recorded top-secret information
[962]
But all of that brings us to this week the CIA and the FBI got word that Saturday mr.
[967]
Li was coming to the United States
[968]
They scrambled they filed charges against him they met him at the airport, and they arrested him
[972]
He was detained in Brooklyn and charged with unlawful possession of classified document
[976]
He's currently being held without bail and awaiting transfer to facilities in Virginia. I will say there is something interesting to note here
[981]
He is only being charged with unlawful possession of classified
[984]
Documents in a situation where it seemingly would be justified to charge him with treason and there are two prevailing theories here one?
[990]
He was coming to the US on such short notice the FBI needed something to charge him with so they really we have the most
[994]
Evidence on this specific thing charge him arrested and to some believe the CIA didn't want full on espionage charges applied right now as that
[1001]
Means the evidence. They would need to provide in court would expose programs
[1004]
They currently have by the way as of right now because Jerry is just charged with this one thing
[1008]
He faces a maximum penalty in ten years
[1010]
If at some point espionage charges are applied he faces a maximum penalty of death, and so that's where we are right now
[1015]
It'll be interesting to see if there are more charges applied on top of this
[1018]
So we'll have to wait and see and then there are several stories
[1021]
I want to talk about but that is where we're gonna end today so that this show can go out on time
[1024]
There's several stories. I want to get to but we'll be able to knock those out by Friday
[1027]
That's said of course with this being the philip defranco show I'd love a new thoughts in the last story the first one anything in
