Puppy First Day Home Tips - Professional Dog Training Tips - YouTube

[1]
- Do you think can handle this much cuteness?
[4]
Well, today we're gonna talk about
[5]
your first day home with your new puppy.
[7]
And I've got this adorable little eight-week-old
[10]
puppy named Levi.
[11]
We're gonna talk to instructor Kim,
[13]
who is one of our head instructors
[14]
of our Head Start for Puppies program,
[16]
and she's just brought Levi home
[18]
just a couple of days ago,
[19]
and we're gonna talk to her about
[20]
her first couple days home with this
[23]
adorable four-legged family member.
[25]
I'm Ken Steepe, and welcome back to McCann Dogs.
[29]
(strumming guitar and dog barking)
[31]
So Levi isn't actually my puppy.
[34]
Levi belongs to Instructor Kim.
[35]
He is an eight-week-old Border Collie,
[37]
and she just brought him home the other day.
[39]
Now, Instructor Kim is one of our
[41]
head instructors for our Head Start for Puppies program,
[44]
so she knows a thing or two about
[45]
puppy behavior and puppy training.
[47]
So I thought this would be a great opportunity
[49]
to help you guys in our YouTube audience
[51]
to learn a little bit about what a professional
[53]
dog trainer would do when preparing to bring a puppy home.
[56]
Now Kim, you have another Border Collie at home, Charlie,
[59]
and it's been a while since you had a puppy,
[62]
so what did you have to get
[63]
to prepare for bringing little Levi home?
[66]
- Yeah, it's actually been about nine years, Ken,
[68]
since I've had a puppy.
[69]
So I didn't have a lot of my regular stuff at home.
[73]
For example, I had to purchase a small collar
[76]
that would fit the puppy.
[77]
I was lucky enough, I found two 21-inch crates
[83]
that I can use on their Vari kennels, the plastic crates.
[88]
- Yeah, that's perfect.
[90]
- On YouTube, not YouTube, sorry.
[91]
- That's all right.
[92]
- On Gigi. - Yeah.
[93]
- So I found those at a great price,
[94]
and I already had them, so I had one for my house,
[97]
and then one for the car.
[99]
And they both have blankets inside.
[101]
I bought some chewy bones, ones that are
[104]
appropriate for a puppy of this age,
[107]
so the softer, less opaque ones that Nylabone makes.
[112]
That was just a brand name, but--
[113]
- [Ken] Yeah, they're great bones, and puppies love them.
[116]
- Yeah, they're really good,
[118]
and they have a flavoring to them,
[120]
so they're kind of enticing.
[122]
I also bought a bag of our,
[125]
the food that I want to transition him over to.
[128]
So when I picked him up, the breeder provided
[130]
a small bag of what she had been feeding him.
[133]
And just because I have great success
[137]
with the product that I'm using on my older dog,
[140]
I want to stick with that name brand,
[143]
and use the puppy version.
[146]
So I bought a small bag of that,
[148]
so I can transition slowly.
[150]
You never want to just introduce
[151]
new food to a puppy right away,
[154]
because that will upset their sensitive stomachs.
[157]
- Yeah, yeah.
[158]
Bringing a new puppy home can be stressful
[160]
for both the puppy and for the puppy owner.
[162]
So talk a little bit about how you prepared
[164]
for that, for the first night, for example,
[167]
that little Levi came home.
[169]
- So the night before, I made sure I got done
[173]
some of my housework that I wanted to do,
[175]
my laundry, just sort of organized everything
[178]
so everything was set up and ready to go,
[181]
and I went to bed early.
[183]
- Okay, that's really important, and don't overlook that,
[185]
having all of those chores and things done
[188]
ahead of bringing the puppy home,
[189]
because I'm sure when the puppy comes home
[192]
for those first days, you're really busy.
[194]
- Yep, there's a lot to think about.
[197]
I mean, puppies require constant supervision,
[200]
so whenever the puppy is not in his create,
[202]
I'm always there within eyes
[206]
distance away from him, literally.
[209]
- Sure.
[209]
- So that I can make sure that he
[211]
doesn't get into anything he shouldn't.
[213]
I keep him safe.
[215]
- Now, it's likely that your puppy's
[216]
going to have an accident in the house,
[218]
whether you're supervising them or not.
[220]
Sometimes they just, they've gotta go.
[222]
Their bladders are small, they haven't learned to hold it
[225]
since they've come home from the litter,
[226]
so tell us a little bit,
[228]
you mentioned that he had an accident
[229]
before you came to the hall here.
[231]
So tell us a little bit about how you
[233]
manage that situation and what to do
[235]
if your puppy does have an accident in the house.
[237]
- Yeah, it was funny, because I knew that
[241]
I should have been supervising him,
[242]
and I made the mistake of supervising him
[245]
by knowing where he was, not actually seeing him.
[249]
- [Ken] Sure.
[250]
- And that's the opportune time
[251]
when accidents do happen, of course.
[252]
- It can happen to anyone.
[253]
- Absolutely, and it's generally when you
[256]
have to be somewhere, which is the case for tonight.
[258]
- (laughs) Yeah, exactly.
[259]
- So, for the most part,
[260]
I'm, as I mentioned early, I'm always supervising,
[263]
I'm always watching him, but I also keep him
[265]
on a very tight schedule.
[267]
So as soon as he comes out of his crate,
[270]
we get our leash on, we go outside.
[273]
I live in a condo, so I'm lucky
[275]
that I'm on the first floor,
[276]
and I'm close to an exit door,
[278]
but I still make sure that I
[280]
take him outside right away
[282]
as soon as he comes out of his crate,
[283]
and I try and give him a chance
[287]
to do everything that he needs to do while he's out there.
[289]
So if he gets a little bit distracted,
[291]
we'll try and take him to a new place and go again.
[296]
If he doesn't go, if there's nothing that he's done,
[299]
then I would put him right back into his crate
[301]
and try him again in maybe five or so minutes,
[306]
and take him back out again.
[307]
Sometimes the world can be a little bit distracting
[309]
for these little guys who haven't seen a whole lot
[312]
from where they were.
[314]
- For sure.
[315]
Now, being a professional dog trainer,
[316]
some of our viewers might think that
[318]
the training starts as soon as the puppy gets home.
[320]
But we know that's not really the case.
[322]
So tell us what you do for the first day,
[324]
and the first couple of days that Levi comes home.
[326]
- Yeah, it's extremely stressful for a puppy.
[330]
If you can imagine they have just spent
[332]
the last eight or so weeks with their litter mates,
[335]
and in their home environment.
[338]
That's the first place that they've ever known,
[340]
and they get taken away from their litter mates
[342]
and brought to a strange environment
[344]
where there could be a wide variety
[346]
of things that are kind of frightening for them.
[350]
Potentially other dogs or other animals, cats,
[353]
I have cats at home.
[355]
Just even the sounds of a house could be different
[358]
than what they were used to in their
[361]
kennel environment, perhaps, so I really take the time to,
[366]
allow him just to adjust to his surroundings,
[369]
to investigate and check things out, but in a safe way.
[373]
So he's, again, always supervised,
[375]
and I prevent, I put things away,
[378]
making sure that he can't really get into too much trouble
[381]
while he's investigating, and just taking his time,
[385]
and also I'm being very respectful for the
[387]
animals that I have at home,
[389]
my cats and my other dog, and I'm giving them
[392]
the space that they need.
[393]
So keeping them a little bit separated,
[396]
doing shift, so to speak.
[399]
- Sure.
[400]
- I'll have him in his crate for a little bit,
[401]
and the rest of the animals can have their
[403]
run around the house, and then I might put those guys away
[406]
and just let him out, and take turns,
[410]
alternating a little bit here and there.
[412]
I'm trying not to overwhelm him too much,
[414]
you know, really keeping an eye on
[415]
what he's able to actually manage,
[419]
and then give him that quiet time, too.
[422]
One of the things I noticed that,
[424]
especially a Border Collie,
[425]
but a lot of puppies are like this,
[427]
they don't have a self-moderator.
[430]
So they will continue to play themselves too hard.
[434]
- [Ken] Right.
[435]
- And they really do need that sleep time.
[437]
We don't need to be doing a whole lot with them
[439]
all the time for those first few weeks.
[441]
So I might have him out and I might
[443]
play with some toys, let him investigate a little bit,
[447]
and then maybe after an hour or so,
[449]
I put him back in his crate for a couple hours,
[453]
and bring him back out, you know, to keep work--
[455]
- Totally, yeah.
[456]
It's a great way to install like an off switch.
[458]
- [Kim] Yes.
[459]
- So that he knows when he goes into his crate
[460]
or his kennel that it's time that he can relax,
[462]
and you know, recuperate and recover.
[464]
I think that's really important,
[465]
and that's something, the mistake, one mistake that I made
[468]
with my Lab puppy, before I was a dog trainer,
[471]
before I really understood,
[472]
is I gave her complete freedom.
[474]
And she was harassing our older Lab,
[476]
and it was just a really, it was an unfair scenario
[478]
for the other animals in the house.
[480]
So I think that's a really important point.
[482]
When Instructor Kim talks about her puppy
[484]
being out of his kennel and supervising him,
[486]
she doesn't just trust it'll make good choices.
[489]
We know that puppies will explore the world
[491]
with their mouths, and get into all sorts of things.
[493]
So even in the first day,
[495]
or the first couple days home,
[496]
Instructor Kim got a house line for Levi.
[499]
And if you haven't seen the video
[500]
where I talk about the house line, I'll link it above.
[502]
But tell us a little bit about
[503]
how you've used the house line with Levi.
[505]
- Yeah, it's a great tool.
[507]
It allows him the freedom, but also my control,
[512]
so that he can't get into too much trouble.
[514]
If he were to, let's say,
[516]
take off with my shoe and run underneath the bed,
[518]
I say this because this has actually almost happened,
[522]
with the house line I was actually able to
[525]
step on it, stop him from getting too far,
[528]
and just redirect that.
[529]
So any of that unwanted behavior,
[532]
I can just stop it right away.
[535]
And it's also great, too, because I don't want him,
[538]
being a herding breed specifically,
[540]
but I really don't want him getting in the habit
[542]
of chasing my cats.
[544]
I want them to live very cohesively in the house,
[548]
and respectful of each other.
[550]
And so if they decide that they've had enough
[554]
and they don't want him in his space,
[556]
the white line is a really great tool,
[558]
because I can actually stop him
[560]
from getting to a point where he's
[561]
really upset my cats.
[563]
- Sure.
[564]
I want to thank Instructor Kim for
[565]
helping us out today, and I certainly want to
[566]
thank little Levi.
