Are MBA Alternatives Worth It? - YouTube
Channel: Career Protocol
[0]
it feels like everybody is pitching
[2]
their alternative to the nba welcome
[4]
back to nba monday i'm angela guido the
[6]
founder of career protocol
[9]
a career coach and mba coach for the
[11]
last 15 years
[13]
helping thousands of people get into
[15]
business school and get into the
[17]
companies of their dreams today i'm
[18]
talking about
[20]
what should you do instead of getting an
[22]
mba two weeks ago i talked about who
[24]
shouldn't apply to business school if
[27]
you're in one of those three categories
[29]
an mba alternative might be the perfect
[32]
thing for you today i'm going to talk
[34]
about what are the mba alternatives and
[36]
how can you get the value that you want
[38]
from business school from somewhere else
[49]
oh i have so much to say about this
[51]
subject
[52]
all right so if we're going to talk
[54]
about mba alternatives
[55]
we really need to talk about the purpose
[58]
and value of an mba in the first place
[60]
because to figure out if an alternative
[63]
will suit you and give you what you need
[65]
you need to first ask yourself what is
[68]
it that i need what is it that i'm
[69]
hoping the mba will give me
[71]
and then consider
[73]
whether you can get that from another
[75]
source than an mba so the majority of
[78]
people who apply to business school
[80]
are looking for one of three or all of
[83]
three things and indeed uh the primary
[86]
benefits
[88]
that mba graduates report align with
[90]
these three things so the the first
[92]
thing is
[93]
an education in business like just
[96]
learning how business works getting
[97]
savvier about the business world that's
[100]
the number one benefit of
[102]
of an mba the second is a network
[106]
a group of friends a group of colleagues
[109]
a group of people who are similarly
[112]
passionate in diverse areas of business
[114]
who are going to be your friends and
[116]
mentors and collaborators throughout the
[118]
course of your career
[119]
and then the third thing that people
[121]
look to business schools for is access
[124]
to opportunities this is really post mba
[127]
recruitment it's getting your next job
[130]
post mba
[131]
it's uh
[132]
the ability to be hired into a job at a
[135]
company that you might otherwise not be
[138]
able to get into from wherever you sit
[140]
today so let's ask ourselves can we get
[144]
that stuff somewhere else
[150]
all right i'm going to take the first
[151]
one first which is education and
[153]
education in business is it possible to
[156]
get a really complete and well-rounded
[158]
understanding of business
[160]
outside of business school
[162]
i would argue that
[164]
this aspect of business school
[166]
is the easiest to replicate
[169]
outside of business school
[171]
and there are all kinds of places that
[173]
you can go
[174]
to get
[175]
information about how business works to
[177]
learn about business and to build your
[179]
inner confidence in understanding how
[181]
the business world works if you're an
[183]
auto died act you might just want to
[185]
start with books there are actually a
[187]
ton of great books out there that will
[188]
help you think like a business leader
[190]
and understand how business works two of
[192]
my personal favorites here's one
[195]
the personal mba
[198]
a world-class business education in a
[201]
single volume
[203]
i don't want to say this book is
[205]
overreaching to say that it's trying to
[207]
replicate business school of course
[210]
a single volume is not going to compare
[212]
to two immersive years surrounded by
[215]
business learning from professors and
[217]
experts and peers
[219]
but if you just want to learn kind of
[221]
like how
[223]
the business world works and how all the
[224]
different functions fit together and how
[226]
a market dynamic is composed
[229]
this is actually a pretty great book so
[232]
maybe start here if you're thinking
[233]
about business school
[236]
a second book that i really love that i
[239]
think sort of baptizes you and how
[241]
business works it's written less from a
[243]
theoretical covering all the bases
[245]
perspective and more from an
[246]
entrepreneurial perspective of helping
[248]
you like actually start and grow and
[250]
build a business and find your place in
[254]
helping a business be successful and
[255]
that's called the one page marketing
[258]
plan obviously the focus on this is
[259]
marketing but alan dibb this really cool
[262]
australian entrepreneurial dude
[265]
uh covers
[267]
a ton of great information about how
[270]
businesses work and
[271]
all the different functions and how they
[273]
fit together to create success and to
[275]
add value to customers what i love about
[277]
this book is that it's really focused on
[280]
creating value building value for
[282]
customers and for stakeholders
[284]
and doing it in a smart no-nonsense way
[287]
then there are online learning platforms
[290]
courses taught by famous business
[292]
leaders or
[293]
famous thinkers it feels like everybody
[296]
is pitching
[297]
their alternative to the mba in fact
[300]
the uh the top
[302]
in fact the top blurb on the personal
[305]
mba is written by seth godin he says
[308]
file this book under
[310]
no excuses
[313]
i don't quite get what that means but
[315]
he has his own seth godin has his own
[318]
alternative mba it's called alt mba it's
[320]
a four-week program in
[323]
learning how to market and build a
[325]
business and communicate effectively
[327]
another great learning resource for
[329]
business oriented people is
[331]
founder.com we'll put the link in the
[333]
description below it's founder without
[335]
any founder.com again run by some guys
[338]
in australia who have some really great
[340]
ideas and a really great network of
[342]
business leaders
[344]
where they've put together courses in
[346]
just about everything you can imagine
[347]
and how to like build and run a business
[349]
most of these resources are designed for
[352]
people who are planning to go an
[354]
entrepreneurial path who are trying to
[355]
start their own thing potentially even
[358]
people who want to be like solo printers
[360]
never mind entrepreneurs but if you're
[361]
really looking to learn
[364]
about how business works
[367]
the number of great cheap and affordable
[370]
resources out there is mind-boggling i
[373]
haven't even gotten into things like hbx
[376]
core
[377]
and business courses offered online by
[379]
top mba programs that are much more
[382]
approachable much more affordable than
[384]
an actual mba so the bottom line is if
[387]
all you really need from the mba is
[389]
education it's learning more about your
[393]
business function or business in general
[395]
i would argue that you can probably get
[398]
that aspect of an mba
[400]
in a much cheaper and more expedient way
[403]
than going to business school
[409]
second thing that people go to business
[410]
school for is the network so if you
[413]
think about what an mba network consists
[415]
of it's having a brand that connects you
[418]
to all the other people that are
[420]
connected to that brand you're an alum
[421]
of that school for the rest of your
[423]
career and so anyone else who went to
[425]
that school is potentially going to be
[426]
more favorably predisposed to speaking
[429]
with you to helping you to hiring you
[430]
etc
[432]
that aspect of business school you're
[434]
not likely going to be able to replicate
[436]
any other way
[438]
the second aspect of having a network is
[441]
actual professional friendships it's
[444]
getting to know people
[446]
and
[448]
being friends with them pretty
[450]
straightforward pretty simple
[452]
and something that by the way the mba
[454]
doesn't guarantee
[456]
you're gonna be in business school but
[458]
if you don't know how to nurture
[459]
relationships and foster collaborative
[462]
friendships
[463]
you may graduate from business school
[464]
without the amazing network that you
[466]
thought you were going to have because
[467]
you didn't work on nurturing and
[469]
building those relationships so creating
[472]
a thriving network is something that
[474]
anyone can do anywhere at any point in
[476]
their life and so i really encourage you
[479]
to start
[480]
doing that right now even before you go
[482]
to business school and even
[484]
don't even think about the mba think
[485]
about how can i continue how can i build
[488]
and grow
[490]
thriving mutually beneficial
[491]
professional friendships if you want
[493]
tips on how to do this you can read my
[495]
book about it we'll put the link in the
[496]
description below i have a whole book on
[498]
how to network without feeling like an
[500]
a-hole it's actually designed for mbas
[502]
but it will help anyone who's
[504]
trying to advance
[506]
your career through friendship
[509]
the third aspect of a network that's
[511]
really important is access to people
[514]
that you might not otherwise encounter
[517]
that includes your classmates but it
[518]
also includes professors and people who
[520]
come to campus to speak it includes
[522]
recruiters it includes all the
[525]
people that surround an mba program that
[528]
you might not come into contact with
[530]
otherwise and if you want to replicate
[532]
this aspect of the mba the best thing to
[535]
do is to just start going to conferences
[537]
start going to public gatherings and
[540]
conferences in your field get to know
[543]
experts and thought leaders in your
[546]
space go to their talks
[549]
connect with them follow up and seek to
[551]
proactively build a network of people
[554]
who can mentor you and advise you on
[556]
your own so that's the second aspect of
[559]
the mba that's really important and
[561]
that's the network and the verdict here
[563]
is well
[564]
it's not going to be the same as going
[566]
to business school and studying for two
[568]
years with people with whom you become
[569]
friends but you can
[571]
build a thriving and frankly
[573]
way more robust network outside of the
[576]
mba if you if you do it on your own
[578]
[Music]
[582]
the third aspect of business school
[584]
that
[585]
most alumni report
[587]
uh being really important to them is
[590]
access
[591]
to opportunities so having the chance to
[594]
be hired by companies into post mba
[597]
managerial roles
[599]
that
[600]
you might otherwise not
[603]
even be able to apply for jobs that you
[605]
wouldn't be considered for unless you
[608]
were part of an mba program and this i
[611]
would say is really
[613]
the hardest aspect of the mba program to
[616]
replicate so
[618]
a top mba program really levels the
[621]
playing field no matter what your
[623]
background is no matter what experience
[625]
you're bringing into that program
[627]
many companies will take you seriously
[630]
as a potential hire if you are
[632]
graduating as a part of the harvard mba
[634]
class or the booth mba class and so if
[637]
you're if one of these opportunities
[641]
is what you really want if that's what
[643]
you're hoping to get out of business
[646]
school
[646]
then probably the mba alternatives are
[650]
not going to satisfy you but
[652]
getting access to
[654]
great job opportunities
[656]
is really contingent on your network in
[659]
the first place this is really the the
[661]
difference because when you're in
[662]
business school you're part of the
[665]
wharton the kellogg the tuck mba
[668]
recruiting network and companies are
[671]
coming to participate in that network
[673]
and to hire people out of those programs
[675]
you can still cultivate your own
[678]
relationships and make inroads to the
[680]
companies that you want to work at
[682]
using the people that are already part
[684]
of your life if you really know how to
[686]
work your network you will never be
[690]
starved for opportunity because
[692]
opportunity comes from relationships the
[695]
mba makes
[697]
a lot more opportunities available to
[699]
you in a short timeline
[701]
and without you having to do a lot of
[702]
work
[703]
not no work but do a lot of work to
[705]
build that network for yourself still
[708]
however if you want access to these
[710]
opportunities there are ways to create
[713]
them on your own
[718]
so if you look at all the things that
[720]
the mba provides uniquely
[722]
that people tend to go to business
[724]
school to gain
[727]
what i've decided here today what we've
[729]
discussed is that there are ways to
[731]
replicate almost all of those aspects of
[734]
the mba
[735]
outside a formal mba program so
[738]
depending on what you really want and
[739]
need from the nba hopefully you found
[742]
some advice today that will help you get
[744]
that outside of business school if you
[745]
decide that business school isn't
[746]
actually the right choice for you the
[748]
last thing i want to say about business
[749]
school and as an alum myself and when i
[753]
talk to my clients and my you know my
[757]
friends who graduated from business
[759]
school
[760]
one of the most important things that
[762]
people say
[764]
about the value they got from business
[766]
school
[768]
that wasn't necessarily
[770]
what they went in to get but it was
[772]
ultimately the most valuable aspect of
[775]
business school for them
[776]
is a sense of inner confidence
[779]
in their ability to lead in a business
[783]
environment
[784]
and this kind of confidence comes partly
[787]
from the education partly from the
[790]
friendships and like collaborating and
[792]
actually trying to make things happen
[794]
at least in simulations but even
[796]
sometimes in live situations during the
[798]
mba and it also comes from going through
[800]
the recruitment process and succeeding
[802]
and getting a job post-mba when you're
[805]
competing with all these other amazing
[806]
people it's really everything that we
[808]
talked about that builds this sense of
[811]
confidence in oneself to go out and lead
[814]
in a business environment
[816]
and
[817]
truthfully one shouldn't need an mba for
[820]
that
[821]
but almost everyone i know who has an
[824]
mba would say
[825]
that they got that from business school
[828]
and they don't know how they could have
[830]
possibly gotten it anywhere else
[832]
and i'm i'm also in that camp i i really
[835]
have to say that personally
[838]
as i have gone about building my
[841]
business and developing my career the
[843]
mba was a dividing line for me there was
[847]
before the mba and after and my
[849]
confidence in myself and what i can
[851]
contribute
[852]
is
[854]
exponentially higher post-mba
[856]
than it is
[858]
than it was pre-mba again it seems a
[860]
high price to pay to build that kind of
[862]
inner confidence and i think if you
[864]
wanted to do that yourself what you have
[866]
to do is
[868]
learn you'd read the books and then you
[870]
go learn and apply it in a mentorship
[873]
environment where someone can be partly
[876]
responsible for your growth and your
[878]
ability to implement the lessons you've
[879]
learned you'd build that inner
[881]
confidence by doing which is ultimately
[883]
how how we all do it but it starts with
[886]
the catalyst of learning something new
[888]
gaining new skills and then
[891]
being able to apply them and to be able
[893]
to trust yourself that it will go well
[896]
when you apply them so we started this
[897]
video asking ourselves if the
[899]
alternatives to an mba are worth it my
[902]
answer is absolutely
[904]
every dollar every hour you spend
[907]
investing in your own development
[909]
through whatever avenue will pay off
[912]
that's just how it is so if you're
[914]
interested in
[915]
any of the mba alternatives i hope
[917]
you'll check them out i've engaged i've
[920]
consumed a lot of them and i actually
[922]
have an mba so you can never over invest
[924]
in your own development as a
[926]
professional as a leader and as a
[927]
competent person whether you decided
[929]
that you're going to go for one of the
[930]
mba alternatives or you're going to go
[932]
straight for the mba yourself you can
[934]
find me right here every monday on nba
[937]
monday good luck i'll see you soon
[947]
