- Hi, this is Mitra, with Roger CPA Review,
[3]
thank you for joining me today.
[5]
Today I'm gonna talk about, why become a CPA.
[7]
Now, I've been in the accounting industry for over 10 years
[10]
and I've seen that it's always been booming.
[12]
It's a very cutting age industry,
[14]
because it's always keeping up
[15]
with change and new technologies.
[17]
And accounting is a very highly recruited major.
[21]
So, it's a great industry to get into,
[23]
but of course there's many career paths you can take.
[26]
So, I'm gonna focus on
[27]
the Certified Public Accountant route, or CPA.
[30]
So you have six reasons to why you should become a CPA.
[33]
Number one, salary.
[35]
You can make five to 15% more than non CPAs,
[39]
that translates to about
[41]
a million dollars more in your career.
[43]
Number two, stability.
[45]
Even during the last US recession, there was a demand
[49]
for hiring accountants, it was still growing.
[51]
And even in the last two years,
[54]
employment for CPAs grew about 22%.
[57]
Number three, you can make a difference in the world.
[60]
Now this is something that we're seeing a real demand for
[65]
amongst the newer generations.
[67]
The Millennials that are already in the workforce
[69]
and generation Z, which are now graduating university,
[73]
and will be the next new hires at the accounting firms.
[76]
These generations are making a difference in company culture
[81]
and it's a very exciting time.
[83]
A recent AICPA article, highlighted some of the ways
[86]
CPA's are really making an impact on society
[89]
and they listed reasons such as, donating money,
[93]
volunteering, working for not-for-profit,
[96]
serving on NFP boards, and also really promoting
[100]
newer areas in accounting,
[102]
such as sustainability accounting.
[104]
Number four, another reason to become a CPA
[107]
is to the incredible value that the license provides.
[111]
It's really the gold standard,
[113]
and it's recognized at 55 US jurisdictions,
[116]
and also internationally.
[118]
In traditional public accounting,
[119]
you pretty much can't get past that manager level,
[122]
unless you are a CPA.
[124]
If you think about it, once you become a CPA,
[127]
the firms can charge higher billable hours on your behalf
[131]
so it's a win, win.
[132]
And because of that they are willing to provide
[134]
a lot of support to get you through the process.
[137]
Many public accounting firms, private industry
[140]
even government agencies,
[142]
will cover a CPA review course cost
[145]
to help you study for and pass the CPA exam.
[149]
They may pay for exam fees, give you time off to study
[153]
and even provide a really great bonus,
[155]
if you pass within a certain time frame.
[157]
So, a lot of support out there for you.
[160]
Even if you choose not to go into public accounting,
[163]
having the CPA will make you stand out
[166]
and make you more competitive.
[168]
I've seen many accountants start of in public,
[171]
get really great training and experience,
[173]
but later on decide that they wanna try
[175]
corporate accounting or private industry.
[178]
Go after roles like internal audit manager,
[181]
or assisting controller, or maybe all the way to CFO.
[185]
Well, those positions are harder to get,
[187]
there's not as many available.
[189]
So, having your CPA, will definitely make you stand out.
[193]
It really provides instant credibility, the CPA license,
[197]
and I think it's because the industry recognizes
[199]
that you have completed the three Es in accounting.
[202]
I'm talking about education,
[204]
exam, as in the CPA exam and experience,
[207]
as in work experience.
[209]
You also really have a four, as in ethics.
[212]
'Cause most states do require you
[213]
to take an ethics exam as well.
[215]
So, think of the CPA exam, as a great anchor certification.
[219]
Sure there's many others out there that could help you
[222]
excel in your career as well, but the CPA gives you
[225]
a really great base that covers a lot of things
[228]
and will help you grow in your career.
[231]
And once you figure it out,
[232]
where you want your expertise to be,
[234]
you can always go for another certification at that point.
[237]
Number five reason for becoming a CPA,
[241]
it will open a world of professional opportunities
[244]
beyond just the traditional accounting ones
[246]
that we know of such as audit and tax.
[249]
Some examples are, financial planner,
[251]
maybe you wanna work for an investment firm
[253]
or a hedge fund, IT consulting.
[256]
You can go work for a software start-up.
[259]
You have environmental accounting, the EPAs hires CPAs.
[263]
Forensic accounting,
[264]
now that's a very booming niche right there,
[268]
and that's basically accounting,
[269]
meeting, investigative skills
[272]
and as often using litigation support
[274]
and there's a lot of growth right there.
[276]
I've seen many CPAs go into teaching,
[279]
becoming a university professor
[281]
or maybe a business coach,
[284]
or even having their own CPA firm.
[288]
So there's many, many opportunities
[290]
that you'll be exposed to as a CPA.
[292]
Finally, number six.
[294]
You've all have access to technology
[296]
that is changing the accounting profession as we speak.
[299]
If you think about it, in last 10 years,
[302]
really, bots have taken over a lot of the basic accounting
[305]
that a new hire, staff level account was once required to do
[310]
that was very tedious.
[312]
So, now that, that's kind of out of the way,
[315]
what's really required of newer accountants
[318]
these days graduating from college
[320]
is critical thinking skills.
[322]
The ability to strategize and apply those strategies.
[325]
And that's why the CPA exam went through
[327]
one of the biggest revamps in a decade.
[330]
Just recently, to have more
[332]
of those critical thinking questions.
[334]
So, as a CPA, you'll have exposure to, and can help mold
[339]
how certain technologies
[340]
will shape accounting in the future.
[343]
I'm talking about technologies
[344]
such as AI, Artificial Intelligence.
[346]
Cloud computing, blockchain technology,
[350]
cryptocurrency for example.
[352]
And as a CPA, you'll have to maintain your license
[355]
by doing CPE, or continued education,
[358]
so you can keep up on these trends and stay educated.
[362]
So there you have it, six reasons why becoming a CPA
[364]
is a great choice.
[366]
Sure it's gonna be challenging at times, the process.
[369]
It does take a lot of hard work and dedication,
[371]
but it will be well worth it.
[373]
I'm even wearing my I heart CPAs pin, in honor of this topic
[378]
and thank you again for joining me.
