How To Get 144Hz on your M1 Mac (for Fortnite, Gaming, Productivity) - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
you may have seen some of my m1 mac
[2]
gaming videos
[3]
already on this channel and in all of
[5]
those videos i've only managed to get a
[7]
60 hertz refresh rate
[8]
on the monitors i was using which
[10]
included an asus 144 hertz
[13]
gaming monitor some of you might even
[15]
just prefer a higher refresh rate not
[17]
for gaming but just for normal office
[19]
work or web browsing as well
[21]
so after doing a bit of research online
[23]
i've discovered that the m1 mac
[25]
does in fact support refresh rates over
[28]
144 hertz
[29]
but you need a specific cable and
[32]
connection
[32]
in this video i'm going to show you
[34]
exactly how to do it what type of cable
[36]
you will need and
[37]
any kind of limitations you might run
[39]
into first things first you're going to
[41]
need a proper monitor
[43]
it doesn't have to be a gaming version
[45]
but it does need to have a high
[47]
refresh rate now this monitor i'm using
[49]
is about four years old now but it
[51]
supports
[52]
up to 144 hertz and the other thing is
[54]
that you need to actually have a need
[56]
for a refresh rate above 60 hertz if you
[59]
play games like fortnite or counter
[61]
strike go
[62]
and you can consistently get above 60
[64]
frames per second on these games
[66]
that is a good reason by the way you
[68]
definitely can get above 60 fps
[70]
on these games just see my other videos
[73]
you will also need a usbc to display
[75]
port cable
[76]
when shopping for one make sure it is a
[78]
displayport version 1.4
[81]
and supports a maximum output of up to
[84]
4k
[84]
at 60 hertz this means that at 1440p
[88]
you will also be able to achieve 144
[91]
hertz
[92]
and i will link a cable that is
[94]
compatible in the description of this
[96]
video
[96]
just to make it easy for you now you can
[99]
try a usbc
[100]
two display port adapter instead of a
[102]
dedicated cable
[103]
but some people online have reported
[106]
some potential issues with this
[108]
as it's technically not a direct
[110]
connection
[111]
so my recommendation is just to spend 25
[113]
or 30 bucks
[114]
on a dedicated compatible cable to save
[117]
yourself
[118]
any headache now if you're using an m1
[120]
mac mini
[121]
instead you can actually use a hdmi 2.0
[124]
cable
[125]
directly from the mini to your monitor
[127]
to achieve the same result
[129]
again i'll have a compatible cable for
[132]
this linked in the description
[134]
so without further ado let's jump into
[136]
the created labs testing studio
[138]
and i'll show you how it works
[142]
okay guys so here we have the setup now
[145]
as i mentioned before i do have a 144
[147]
hertz asus
[148]
gaming monitor so this is 27 inch it's
[150]
an ips display and also one millisecond
[153]
refresh
[154]
i've also got the 2020 m1 macbook air
[157]
just the base model here
[159]
eight gigs of ram two five six gigabytes
[161]
of storage
[163]
in terms of accessories i've actually
[164]
got this really cool mechanical
[166]
razer keyboard here if you guys are
[169]
interested in me doing a review on this
[170]
i will soon uh it's sort of a very no
[173]
frills no fuss keyboard
[175]
works very good sounds nice as well uh
[178]
and it actually
[179]
completely detaches from the cable it is
[182]
a usbc cable
[184]
and as you can see here if i literally
[187]
just plug the other end of this usbc
[190]
cable
[191]
into the mac air
[194]
so you can see there it's plugged in um
[197]
this actually works
[199]
really really well as you can see there
[201]
anyway that's on top of this video
[203]
as you can see here i have the cable i
[206]
was mentioning before
[209]
so it's just a usbc to display port so
[211]
what i'll do first of all is i'll plug
[213]
it into the monitor
[214]
and then into the mac and we'll get this
[216]
test started okay so i've plugged it
[218]
into the monitor now let's plug it into
[220]
the usbc port on the mac mini
[228]
and as you can see there loads up fine
[230]
without any issues
[231]
and first things first let's see if this
[233]
thing is actually coming up as
[236]
1440p and also 144 hertz
[239]
so we'll come up into the apple logo
[241]
system preferences
[242]
and we'll go displays and as you can see
[246]
here we've got two 560 by 1440p
[250]
we've also got the full 144 hertz
[253]
refresh rates that's working
[255]
perfectly now what does that look like
[258]
well you may not be able to see it on
[260]
this particular camera
[261]
because i'm only able to record in 25
[264]
frames per second on this camera the way
[266]
i have it set up
[267]
but looking at this in real life it's
[269]
very very smooth there's not really any
[271]
screen tearing
[272]
it looks a lot better than 60 hertz so
[274]
what we'll do is we'll do actually a
[276]
proper test so i'm just going to load up
[278]
a relatively
[280]
resource friendly game and that is going
[282]
to be
[283]
fortnight a few of you guys have seen
[285]
some of my previous fortnight videos
[287]
so i thought it'd be a good game just to
[288]
test so let's load this
[290]
up we'll get into the settings and then
[291]
we'll see what kind of fps
[293]
and also experience we can have with a
[296]
144 hertz
[298]
gaming monitor gaming on an m1 macbook
[300]
air
[301]
alright so now we're on the menu screen
[303]
so let's just go into battle
[305]
royale now a few people have asked me
[307]
how i'm able to play
[308]
fortnite and this is an older season i
[310]
don't really play fortnite obviously
[312]
at all so i don't know a whole lot about
[314]
it but i've been reading into it and
[315]
this is just an older season so
[317]
don't pay too much attention to it apple
[319]
and fortnite
[320]
have had a big fight and uh it's just a
[323]
bit of a mess
[324]
so anyway let's go into the settings
[326]
here
[327]
and let's make sure we're at 1440p
[331]
we'll set the frame rate to unlimited uh
[334]
everything else here i'm actually just
[336]
going to set
[336]
everything to low except 3d resolution
[340]
i'm going to leave that 100
[341]
and just because i want to maximize the
[343]
fps just to see
[345]
what the experience is like i might
[348]
actually
[348]
crank this down to 1080p but we'll see
[351]
how it goes at 1440p
[353]
so let's apply that go back and we'll
[356]
just get into a solo game
[359]
okay guys so we are now on the ground uh
[362]
we're not
[362]
quite getting past 60fps i mean where we
[365]
are at 60 fps
[366]
so what i'm going to do now is i'm
[367]
actually going to go into the settings
[368]
and i'm just going to change this to
[370]
1080p
[371]
just so we can maximize the fps okay so
[374]
as you can see
[375]
in the top right hand corner we are
[377]
pretty much bang on 100 fps
[380]
we're actually getting a little bit
[381]
above that and if i run around and kind
[383]
of do some jumping and some quick
[385]
movements
[385]
it is definitely more than 60 fps like i
[389]
can see a
[389]
huge difference compared to what i was
[392]
doing before
[393]
now you will obviously notice some of
[395]
the artifacting there and again guys
[396]
this game is not optimized at all
[398]
for the m1 so you will see a little bit
[401]
of glitching here and there but the
[403]
actual
[403]
gameplay is totally fine i can run
[406]
around i can jump i can do this and that
[409]
the frames will sometimes drop down to
[410]
around 60.
[412]
but right now as you can see i'm at
[414]
about
[416]
60 to 70 fps and if i come back over
[418]
here i'll be back up to 100
[420]
and it's very very smooth so definitely
[423]
you definitely can tell the difference
[424]
between
[425]
60 fps and a 100 fps right now on the m1
[429]
which is pretty cool because again this
[430]
is only about two
[431]
and a half months old anyway guys that's
[434]
it for this video hope you enjoyed
[436]
again just a really quick one just to
[437]
show you that yes you can
[439]
get a 144 hertz refresh rate from your
[442]
m1 devices
[444]
you do just need to be using the correct
[446]
cable and you can still play games or do
[449]
productivity
[450]
tasks or web browse and get that really
[452]
nice buttery smooth
[454]
144hz refresh rate on a particular
[457]
monitor
[458]
from the m1 apart from that thank you
[459]
guys for watching again any comments or
[461]
questions
[462]

[464]
the link to the appropriate cables are
