NRA Fights To Declare Bankruptcy As NY AG Lawsuit Threatens To Dissolve Organization | Rachel Maddow - YouTube

[0]
there was the 39 000 shopping spree
[3]
on really nice suits uh there was the
[7]
200 000 spent on private jet
[10]
vacations uh there was a stay on a 108
[13]
foot yacht that came with a private chef
[16]
and a jet boat and a couple of jet skis
[19]
actually a couple of nice long stays on
[21]
that yacht tens of thousands of dollars
[23]
spent on hair and makeup for the ceo's
[26]
wife
[27]
all things that were paid for by the
[29]
unwitting members
[30]
of a non-profit organization members who
[33]
apparently had no idea that that's the
[35]
kind of stuff their membership dues
[37]
were being spent on last year the
[40]
attorney general in the state of new
[41]
york leticia james
[43]
sued the national rifle association
[45]
because the nra is technically a
[47]
non-profit
[48]
it's chartered to operate within her
[49]
jurisdiction in the state of new york
[51]
and these kinds of spending details the
[54]
private jets and the hair and the makeup
[56]
and the vacations
[57]
those were the basis of her lawsuit
[59]
attorney general tish james basically
[61]
charges in her suit that the people in
[62]
charge of the nra
[64]
used the money the nra collected from
[66]
its members as a private piggy bank to
[68]
pay for lavish vacations and travel and
[70]
personal privileges for themselves
[72]
and their family members and it's one
[74]
thing to live your life that way on your
[76]
own dime
[76]
to spend your own money on yachts and
[79]
private jets and safaris and stuff
[82]
but if you're spending the money of a
[84]
non-profit organization on that stuff
[86]
it may well be fraudulent and illegal
[90]
so attorney general tish james of new
[92]
york sued to
[93]
dissolve the entire organization she
[96]
sued to dissolve the nra
[98]
for its leader's alleged financial
[100]
misconduct the nra denies any
[102]
allegations of financial mismanagement
[104]
they called the lawsuit
[105]
brought by tisch james baseless but they
[108]
also reacted to it in some unexpected
[110]
ways
[110]
given the nature of the allegations in
[112]
the lawsuit right the lavish
[114]
spending allegations it was weird that
[116]
in the immediate wake of this lawsuit
[118]
being brought by attorney general chase
[120]
james
[121]
the nra earlier this year filed for
[123]
bankruptcy
[125]
bankruptcy that's a weird thing to do
[127]
when you apparently have 39
[129]
000 to spend on fine luxury suits for
[132]
your
[133]
company's executives on the same day
[136]
they filed for bankruptcy it got even
[138]
weirder the nra told its supporters
[140]
that their declaration of bankruptcy was
[142]
actually coming at a time when quote the
[144]
nra is in its strongest financial
[146]
condition in years
[150]
again that's a weird thing to say on the
[151]
same day you've officially declared
[153]
bankruptcy in a court of law
[155]
why are you telling a court that you're
[156]
totally out of money while at the same
[158]
time you're telling all support all your
[159]
supporters we have never been richer
[164]
but the nra asked a court to please
[166]
allow them to declare bankruptcy
[168]
they said their intention was to
[171]
reincorporate the nra as a new entity
[173]
not in new york anymore but in the state
[175]
of texas far away from attorney general
[177]
tis james in the state of new york
[180]
all those circumstances suggest that
[182]
this oddly timed bankruptcy application
[184]
by the nra
[185]
was not really about the com the
[187]
organization going bankrupt at all
[189]
but instead may have been devised as a
[191]
way to dodge that lawsuit to
[193]
dodge accountability from the new york
[195]
attorney general who was trying after
[197]
all to dissolve their entire
[199]
organization
[200]
one neat trick when you file for
[202]
bankruptcy is that it essentially puts a
[204]
pause on any other ongoing litigation
[206]
that may be pending against you
[208]
that may be what the nra was banking on
[210]
here the wall street journal pointed out
[212]
at the time that at a minimum the nra's
[214]
bankruptcy declaration would
[215]
delay dis james's lawsuit against them
[218]
they noted that organizations often file
[220]
for bankruptcy in such circumstances to
[222]
try to slow
[223]
walk litigation we don't know for sure
[225]
whether that's what the nra was doing
[227]
but if that is what the nra was doing
[230]
what they were trying to do here and if
[231]
they get caught for trying to do that
[233]
here
[234]
that could get them in even more trouble
[237]
the judge in this case that's deciding
[239]
whether or not the nra will be allowed
[240]
to declare bankruptcy
[242]
they have the option of appointing a
[244]
trustee
[245]
to manage the nri's finances putting in
[248]
an overseer
[249]
an outsider to investigate the financial
[252]
fraud allegations laid out by
[254]
tisch james and to make all financial
[255]
decisions going forward
[257]
for the nra the judge also has the
[260]
option of just
[261]
saying no dismissing the bankruptcy
[263]
application by the nra and that of
[265]
course would clear the way for tis james
[266]
to continue her litigation which again
[269]
seeks to dissolve the organization
[272]
the nra's bankruptcy trial started this
[275]
week in federal bankruptcy court
[276]
in texas the entire trial is expected to
[278]
last about a week
[280]
several top nra officials are expected
[282]
to testify about the alleged spending
[283]
abuses
[284]
for the first time ever including the
[286]
ceo wayne lapierre the guy who allegedly
[288]
spent all that nra money
[290]
on suits for himself and makeup for his
[292]
wife and got the
[293]
free stays on the fancy 108 108-foot
[295]
yacht
[296]
wayne lapierre was asked about the stays
[299]
on the yacht today as part of a
[300]
deposition that was filed with the court
[302]
he asked why he needed to stay on that
[305]
yacht as part of
[306]
official nra business why he accepted
[309]
that stay on a yacht
[311]
from a yacht owner who was getting
[313]
multi-million dollar contracts from the
[315]
nra at the same time
[318]
wayne lapierre told the court that he
[320]
went and stayed on that yacht
[322]
after the sandy hook shooting in 2012
[325]
after 26 people most of them little boys
[326]
and girls were murdered at school he
[328]
said after sandy hook he thought
[330]
his own life was in danger as the head
[332]
of the nra and so he fled
[334]
to the yacht for safety he said the
[336]
yacht was quote
[338]
quote the one place that i hoped i could
[340]
feel safe
[341]
i remember getting there going thank god
[343]
i'm safe nobody can get me here
[348]
as i mentioned the nra bankruptcy trial
[350]
it's in federal bankruptcy court in
[351]
in texas um the nra officials
[355]
who are having to testify at that
[356]
bankruptcy trial it's the first time
[358]
any of them have had to try had to
[360]
testify under oath and had to answer
[362]
publicly
[363]
for the ways they allegedly ripped off
[365]
their members to the tune
[366]
of tens and hundreds of millions of
[368]
dollars um
[370]
this is one of those stories we i think
[372]
i feel like lawsuits and
[373]
and legal cases get covered pretty well
[376]
in this country i don't know if it's
[377]
because this is a bankruptcy court it's
[378]
not getting as much attention but
[380]
this has huge ramifications for a really
[382]
important political issue in this
[383]
country
[384]
and so far what we've learned has just
[385]
been shocking
