Budget Zwift Setup Vs Premium | What Is The Difference? - YouTube

Channel: Global Cycling Network

[2]
- You don't need a great deal of kit
[4]
to get started on Zwift.
[5]
In fact, aside from your subscription to Zwift itself,
[8]
all you gotta have is a basic turbo trainer,
[10]
a speed sensor, and then just your smartphone,
[13]
in fact, to use Zwift on.
[15]
- However, you could invest in some
[16]
amazing equipment to enhance your experience.
[18]
Wahoo have kindly supplied us with
[20]
their full Kickr rein,
[21]
so we have a interactive smart trainer,
[23]
the fan, and the Climb which changes
[26]
gradient as if you were outside.
[27]
- Yeah. The question is though,
[28]
what is actually the difference in experience
[32]
between these two setups?
[33]
We thought it was about time we put the
[35]
two head-to-head to try and find out.
[38]
(upbeat hip-hop music)
[50]
We will start with our entry-level setup.
[52]
We've gone and gotten ourselves a basic
[54]
wheel-on resistance trainer.
[56]
It's actually got a magnetic resistance unit
[58]
that is variable manually
[61]
via this lever.
[62]
Now, anyone who's been into cycling for a while,
[65]
is gonna be very familiar with this type
[66]
of turbo trainer cause that's, frankly,
[68]
what all turbo trainers used to be like.
[70]
And for that reason,
[71]
you can pick these up relatively inexpensively now.
[73]
So it's a great way into the world of indoor training.
[77]
To connect it up to Zwift though,
[79]
as I mentioned at the start,
[80]
you are gonna need a speed sensor.
[83]
Importantly, though, it's a speed sensor
[85]
that connects to the device that you're gonna use it on.
[89]
If you have a speed sensor that transmits for ANT+,
[92]
the chances are you're gonna need an adapter
[94]
to actually pick up that signal from your computer
[96]
or your laptop or whatever.
[98]
In this case,
[99]
it transmits via Bluetooth as well,
[100]
which means I can pick it up directly
[102]
from my smartphone which is what I'll be using
[105]
in this instance.
[106]
Remembering to attach that
[107]
speed sensor to your back wheel,
[108]
cause that's the only one that's spinning, of course,
[110]
you then pair it up to your device
[113]
where it can then tell Zwift how fast that
[115]
back wheel is spinning.
[117]
The clever bit is when you also tell Zwift
[119]
what trainer you're using cause they
[121]
have calculated just how much resistance
[123]
each trainer generates.
[124]
Meaning that when it knows how fast
[126]
that back wheel is spinning,
[128]
it can then calculate how much power
[130]
you're putting out in order to make you do that.
[133]
(upbeat techno music)
[138]
- So here we have the Wahoo Kickr,
[140]
the Kickr Climb,
[141]
and the Kickr Headwind.
[142]
The Wahoo Kickr is their top-of-the-range
[144]
smart turbo trainer,
[145]
and the obvious difference to this one
[147]
and the one that Si was using before,
[149]
is that my bike has no rear wheel.
[151]
It is a direct-to-drive turbo which comes complete
[153]
with its own cassette.
[155]
Meaning you'll no longer use your own rear wheel,
[157]
and you wont' end up with those black marks
[159]
all over the wall.
[160]
Inside, though, is where the real difference lies.
[163]
The turbo has a variable resistance unit
[165]
and a power meter meaning that it will both
[167]
accurately calculate my output
[169]
and adjust the resistance that I'm feeling in
[170]
the pedals depending on where I'm riding on Zwift.
[174]
This means that riding uphill
[175]
actually feels like going uphill,
[176]
and you'll need to change gear accordingly.
[179]
Upfront then, and what we have here,
[180]
is the Wahoo Kickr Climb.
[182]
This automatically simulates the gradient,
[185]
again, mimicking what's going on on Zwift.
[187]
Up to 20% incline and 10% decline.
[190]
And finally, we have the Kickr Headwind.
[192]
And this is a fan that connects to your turbo trainer,
[195]
or your heart rate monitor,
[196]
and adjusts the level of cooling based on
[198]
the intensity of your riding.
[199]
You can, of course,
[200]
override this and just put it on full.
[202]
- Chris, should we Zwift?
[204]
- Let's.
[206]
- Before we start,
[207]
apologies, mate,
[207]
for making you go on the entry-level setup.
[209]
It just so happens that we don't have
[211]
the necessary adapters for that trainer
[213]
to allow me to fit my disparate bike on there.
[216]
So you're just gonna have to
[218]
tell me all about it, mate.
[219]
- Not sure that was the most sincere apology,
[221]
but let's go on.
[222]
- Alright, here we go.
[224]
(gentle techno music)
[228]
- The first thing that you'll notice when
[229]
riding a basic setup,
[230]
is that there is no direct feedback
[232]
through the pedals.
[233]
No resistance change as you ride uphill or downhill.
[236]
Now, although I really miss that,
[237]
I think it's probably fair to say that
[239]
unless you've ridden a smart trainer,
[241]
you won't actually know what you're missing anyway.
[243]
But let's not focus on what you don't have,
[245]
but what you do.
[245]
You can still use all the social aspects of Zwift,
[248]
you can logon and change your avatar,
[250]
advance through all the levels,
[251]
explore the world,
[252]
and join group rides.
[254]
And the training functionality is still there.
[256]
You can logon and use the multitude of training
[259]
sessions that Zwift has and ride along to them.
[261]
And don't forget, the effort I'm putting in is
[264]
still the same no matter what the trainer.
[266]
The estimation of power is also great for training,
[269]
especially when it comes to tracking your improvements.
[271]
If it's telling you you have an FTP of 200 watts,
[274]
and you've boosted that up to 220,
[276]
those are real fitness gains.
[278]
Yes, it may not be that accurate,
[280]
and the degree of error could mean that
[281]
you've actually gone from 240 watts up to 270,
[284]
but, assuming you're always using the same setup,
[287]
then the results should at least be consistent.
[290]
(gentle techno music)
[294]
- So what then about our bells and whistles setup?
[297]
What do we get?
[298]
Well, following off from what Chris
[299]
has just been saying about training,
[301]
the power meter built in to this Kickr
[305]
is accurate to just 2% meaning that
[307]
we can use it to closely monitor our training,
[310]
and it also means that we can actually compare
[312]
our own results to other people's cause
[314]
2% accuracy is kind of like the gold standard.
[317]
Now, you might not be into waggling around
[319]
your FTP in front of other people,
[321]
but what it does mean on Zwift
[323]
is that you will be eligible to post results
[325]
in Zwift racing because Zwift racing knows
[328]
that you are using equipment that can be trusted.
[331]
The other point to note from the training sessions
[333]
is that by using a smart trainer,
[335]
you have an option opened up to you called Erg Mode,
[337]
and this is where the trainer would generate
[340]
the exact resistance required for each interval.
[343]
And that's using the calculations that Zwift has made
[346]
based on my own ability.
[348]
So what it means in practice, is that if,
[350]
for example, the interval specifies 350 watts,
[354]
so long as I'm turning the pedals,
[356]
this trainer would generate that resistance.
[359]
It means that I will be doing 350 watts
[361]
no matter how fast or slowly I'm pedaling.
[364]
For me, though, it's probably the enhancement
[366]
to the riding experience that's most notable.
[369]
So the feedback that you get from the trainer,
[372]
depending on what's going on on-screen,
[374]
so as I'll start to climb,
[375]
I'll feel the resistance kick in
[377]
meaning that I'll have to change gear.
[379]
And then also with this Kickr Climb upfront,
[382]
the gradient of my bike changes
[384]
meaning that my body position changes as well.
[386]
Now, although I'm not literally fighting gravity,
[388]
it does kinda feel like it just as
[390]
the opposite is true when I start going downhill,
[393]
the resistance eases off,
[394]
and away I go.
[395]
Now I think it's fair to say that
[398]
if you are using a smart trainer,
[400]
just like if you had a power meter on your bike,
[402]
then you can definitely enhance your training.
[405]
You could probably get fitter as a result
[408]
because you can really drill down
[410]
and make sure the training you're doing
[412]
is absolutely optimal.
[413]
And then the other thing away from training,
[415]
if you're just a big fan of riding on Zwift,
[418]
the community, the social element,
[420]
then having this setup will enhance
[423]
the experience for you.
[424]
But, the good news is that in both those cases,
[427]
it is, of course, not essential.
[429]
What I would do though,
[431]
I would try and replicate from this
[433]
onto the basic setup is firstly,
[435]
a way of cooling yourself down.
[436]
So you do get hot riding indoors,
[439]
and so any old fan is better than nothing.
[442]
Although of course, the better the fan,
[444]
the better your cooling will be.
[446]
Then the other thing,
[447]
is that although that smartphone that
[448]
Chris is using is incredibly convenient,
[450]
particularly if you're traveling around,
[452]
you will find that you're more connected
[455]
if you're using a bigger screen.
[457]
So a tablet, or in this case,
[458]
I got an Apple TV connected up to a giant screen
[461]
and I do indeed feel very connected
[463]
with my virtual world.
[465]
And the good thing about that is it then
[466]
leaves your phone free to use for the companion app.
[470]
(upbeat techno music)
[475]
- It's been a long time since I use Zwift
[476]
on a completely normal indoor turbo trainer
[478]
like this one,
[478]
and it's quite weird not feeling the climbs
[480]
or feeling the slipstream as others go past me,
[483]
but if I'd never experienced that,
[485]
I wouldn't know I was missing out.
[486]
- No, but given that you went from
[488]
an ordinary trainer to a smart trainer,
[491]
how did that feel for you making that step up?
[495]
- Well I really enjoyed it because
[497]
I don't always do a training session,
[498]
so when I logged on I just wanted to go for a ride
[500]
or go hard every now and again,
[502]
kinda like a far like style thing,
[504]
and to feel the climb hit you as opposed to
[506]
you having to change gears to alter the intensity,
[509]
I really enjoyed that.
[510]
- Yeah I think that's the thing is that with the
[512]
extra investment of those interactive trainers,
[515]
you get that element to which it's more realistic,
[518]
and it also breaks up what's otherwise
[520]
quite a linear experience in that,
[522]
as you say, you have to respond...
[524]
My bike just angles there as the gradient kicks in.
[527]
You have to respond to what's going on in the road,
[529]
so it breaks things up,
[530]
you're changing gear,
[532]
you're having to pick up your cadence,
[533]
get used to those shifts in resistance,
[536]
and it does feel very similar to riding outside.
[539]
I guess, the strength of the basic setup though,
[542]
is that you have most of the elements
[544]
of Zwift still at your disposal,
[546]
so you've got all the training sessions.
[548]
- Yeah.
[549]
- And they you will feel absolutely normal.
[550]
You can control those completely,
[553]
and also you've got the social elements,
[554]
so we are kind of riding together, aren't we?
[556]
- Yep, and I-- - Although I think
[557]
I dropped you.
[558]
- Uh yeah, a little bit.
[559]
I also get my power output here
[561]
based on the slope curve of the turbo trainer,
[563]
so I know just how hard I'm trying.
[565]
- Yeah. Is it accurate?
[568]
- Yeah, probably.
[568]
It's not too far off, actually.
[569]
- Yep, there we go.
[571]
(upbeat techno music)
[576]
As we conclude this video,
[577]
there is one thing that we should
[579]
mention first and foremost,
[580]
and that is that we've got trainers at
[582]
completely the opposite end of the spectrum here.
[585]
And it's not an either-or situation because
[587]
there are ones in the middle, aren't there?
[589]
So you can get more basic interactive trainers
[592]
that do not cost as much money,
[594]
but that still give you the interactive feel
[596]
that you get from Zwift.
[597]
So they've got variable resistance units,
[599]
and they've also got built-in power meters as well.
[602]
- To get the most out of your standard turbo trainer,
[604]
you want to keep a close eye on your tire pressures
[606]
and the air pressure and temperature in the room
[608]
you're using it in as well.
[609]
This will help you get better,
[610]
more consistent power readings.
[612]
- Yeah that's right,
[612]
so that every time you jump on it,
[614]
you know that it's measuring your effort
[616]
even if it's not necessarily as accurate
[619]
as a power meter or an interactive smart trainer.
[622]
And let's face it as well,
[622]
you are still getting almost all of the benefits
[625]
of Zwift even without those interactive elements.
[627]
So you've got all of the training sessions,
[629]
as you've already mentioned.
[630]
You've got all of the social elements,
[631]
you can join in the group rides,
[632]
you can ride around those purpose-built worlds
[635]
designed for cycling.
[637]
Right, well make sure you get involved in
[638]
the comment section down below.
[640]
Hopefully, first and foremost,
[641]
you found this video useful in terms of
[643]
what you need to actually start Zwifting,
[645]
or indeed make those next steps up,
[648]
but let us know what you use as well.
[649]
It'd be really interesting to read those
[650]
down in the comments.
