[0]
the size of the president's proposed
[2]
social spending bill could be
[3]
significantly reduced after the
[5]
president took a more prominent role in
[7]
negotiations the first major item that
[10]
appears to be out is tuition-free
[12]
community college for everyone it is a
[14]
sacrifice in order to lower the price to
[17]
get all democrats on board guaranteed
[20]
paid family leave could also be reduced
[22]
from 12 weeks to possibly four
[25]
what is likely to be preserved is
[27]
medicare expansion universal pre-k and a
[30]
one-year extension of the child tax
[32]
credit now this all comes as democrats
[34]
are facing a self-imposed deadline to
[37]
pass social spending and the
[38]
infrastructure bill by the end of the
[41]
month for more on all of this i want to
[43]
bring in congresswoman mikey sharrell
[45]
she represents new jersey's 11th
[48]
congressional district congresswoman
[50]
shrill thank you for joining us so let's
[52]
start with the possible concessions free
[55]
community college is potentially being
[56]
cut guaranteed paid family leave is
[59]
potentially being reduced what is your
[61]
reaction to cutting those items both of
[64]
which the president fought quite hard
[66]
for and what's your thought of the bill
[67]
being scaled down from 3.5 trillion to
[70]
just under two
[73]
sure thanks so much for having me i
[74]
think we've known for some time that the
[77]
the size of the bill was going to be
[78]
coming down so we've been looking at
[81]
what is it that we can invest in to make
[83]
the most amount of impact for americans
[85]
and and that's what we're looking at now
[87]
these are critical issues that are going
[90]
to invest in our economy for the next
[92]
several decades so when we look at
[94]
things like universal pre-k making sure
[96]
people have expanded access to that is
[99]
so important
[100]
as we educate the future workforce
[102]
making sure we have child care in there
[104]
as you know some of the worst hit people
[107]
in this nation after covet have been
[109]
women and women accounted for over half
[112]
of our workforce pre-coveted which was
[114]
actually quite shocking to me and i'm
[116]
sure to many of your listeners so it's
[118]
really important that we invest in child
[120]
care and ensure that they have the means
[122]
to re-enter the workforce in fact the
[124]
recent jobs numbers were really
[126]
dismaying when we saw 26 000 women
[128]
losing jobs while over 200 000 men
[131]
gained jobs and that didn't even include
[134]
the 300 000 women that had just quit
[136]
looking for work
[137]
right and you have made this a a big
[140]
issue for you you made the child care
[142]
benefit nearly universal and in the
[143]
buildback uh better act universal pre-k
[146]
and a one-year extension of the child
[148]
tax credit are likely to be preserved um
[151]
but what do you feel about these other
[153]
parts of it that might not last you know
[155]
tell us about why the issue of child
[157]
care is so important to you
[160]
so part of the reason it's so important
[162]
to me is quite frankly i have four
[164]
children of my own and i can tell you
[166]
firsthand how difficult child care is
[169]
for working parents across the country
[172]
before covet in new jersey there were
[174]
about two children for every one spot in
[176]
child care centers now that that
[179]
situation that was already at a really
[181]
bad point has become a crisis in this
[184]
country now in new jersey there are
[185]
about five children for every one spot
[188]
in a recent discussion with the child
[190]
care center the owner of that center was
[192]
telling me she takes calls all day long
[194]
from people desperately searching for a
[197]
safe affordable place to put their child
[199]
as they try to get back to work
[202]
and congresswoman
[203]
as you know president biden met with
[205]
both senators joe manchin and kirsten
[207]
sinema yesterday
[209]
they are both potentially holding up
[210]
this bill because of the price tag
[213]
with the price tag looking as though it
[215]
will be substantially cut
[217]
what would you say to your democratic
[219]
colleagues in the senate as you try and
[222]
pass this bill
[224]
well i think it's what i would say to
[226]
all of my democratic colleagues in the
[228]
house and senate alike this is a
[230]
critical piece of legislation that we
[232]
have to get across the finish line but i
[235]
think that would probably be well known
[237]
to every single member of my caucus we
[239]
know that we are investing in the future
[242]
of america we are making investments now
[244]
in our crumbling infrastructure in child
[246]
care and getting rid of the state and
[248]
local tax deduction cap investments that
[250]
are going to move this country forward
[252]
for decades to come so the future really
[255]
starts here and that's what we're all
[257]
trying desperately to get across the
[259]
finish line and we all believe so deeply
[261]
in these programs
[263]
house speaker nancy pelosi has set a
[266]
self-imposed deadline of october 31st
[268]
for passing this legislation and the
[271]
bipartisan infrastructure bill
[273]
does it look to you like that is all on
[275]
track right now
[277]
well i certainly hope so because when i
[279]
go home to new jersey
[281]
and i talk about this piece of
[283]
legislation i hear again and again and
[285]
again please get that passed
[287]
get this legislation passed we need to
[290]
get shovels in the ground for the
[291]
gateway tunnel project we need to make
[293]
sure we're building back our economy and
[296]
ensuring that everyone has a great
[297]
future and our children have a great
[299]
future the investments in research and
[301]
development alone are going to be so
[303]
important to many of our corporations
[305]
across north jersey so this is a
[308]
critical piece of legislation and i i do
[311]
think the sooner we get this passed the
[313]
better for families across this country
[316]
congresswoman mikey cheryl thank you so
[318]
much for joining us we appreciate your
[319]
time
[321]
thanks so much
