Welcome to the Hereâs My Story channel.
[2]
Iâm Sam.
[3]
One night, my stepdad came home out of breath.
[6]
âTurn off the lights!
[7]
They were following me but I got rid of them.
[9]
They canât find out where I live.
[11]
Or else, Iâm done for!â
[12]
I turned off all the lights.
[14]
My mom screamed, âWhatâs going on?
[17]
Who are you running away from?
[18]
Have you been gambling again?â
[20]
My stepdad shut her up by saying,
âKeep your voice down!
[23]
Theyâll hear you.
[25]
These men are armed.
[26]
Trust me, you donât want them to find me!â
[28]
We waited anxiously all night in the dark,
listening to the sounds outside.
[32]
Whenever a car passed by,
our hearts started pounding.
[35]
Iâd never been so scared in my life.
[38]
My stepdad Keith has a gambling problem.
[40]
As usual, he lost all the money
he had on him.
[43]
Then he borrowed money from the casino.
[46]
He gambled that away as well.
[47]
The owner of the casino said,
âYou have one week.
[50]
If you donât pay, you'll owe me
twice as much!â
[53]
My step dad couldnât pay it back.
[55]
Months passed by.
[57]
His debt kept going up.
[58]
Eventually, the owner of the casino decided
to take the matter into his own hands.
[63]
My dad died when I was ten.
[64]
My mom was really lonely after that.
[66]
She needed someone she could share life with.
[69]
She met Keith last year but,
[71]
I knew he wasnât a good person
the first time I saw him.
[74]
I begged my mom not to marry him,
but she wouldnât listen.
[76]
She married him too quickly.
[78]
And even though the marriage is failing,
she still puts up with him
[81]
because she is scared of being alone.
[84]
The next morning, I had to go to school
[86]
because I had an important exam.
[87]
I hadnât gotten enough sleep,
and I was feeling awful.
[90]
During the exam, I put my head on the desk,
and fell asleep for a while.
[94]
My teacher noticed and asked,
âWhatâs going on Sam?
[97]
Are you sick?ââš
[98]
After the exam, my best friend Pete
came to chat.
[101]
âYou donât look good, bro.
[103]
Whatâs up?â he said.
[104]
I told him what happened the night before.
[106]
He was concerned.
[107]
âThis is really serious.
[109]
In movies, when bad guys want to scare people
who owe them, they say,
[113]
âIf you donât pay, you wonât see your family again.â
[116]
So itâs not your step dad whoâs in real
danger, itâs you and your mom,â he said.
[120]
Pete was right.
[121]
âItâs impossible for him to come up with
all that money to pay the guys.
[124]
I need to protect my mom from them but I donât
know how Iâm going to do that,â I replied.
[129]
Pete smiled.
[131]
âI owe you a lot.
[132]
Now itâs time for me to help you out.
[133]
Weâre going to our place after school.
[135]
I only need you to promise me one thing.
[138]
Everything youâll find out will stay
a secret between us, deal?â
[142]
I was really intrigued.
[144]
I nodded.
[144]
âOf course.
[145]
You can trust me,â I said.
[148]
You might be wondering why Pete
said, âI owe you a lot.â
[151]
So let me tell you.
[152]
Pete came to our school
at the beginning the year.
[155]
Just like in every other school,
we have got bullies
[157]
They started picking on him
because Pete was so short.
[160]
They shout, âMidget!â
whenever they saw him.
[163]
Pete couldnât say anything back
because he was afraid of them.
[166]
We had just met.
[167]
Once they started picking on Pete
when I was with him.
[170]
But I taught those bullies
a lesson that day.
[172]
From then on, they kept away from us.
[175]
After that, Pete always felt like he owed me,
[177]
but I didnât expect anything in return
since he was my friend.
[181]
Iâd never been to Peteâs house.
[183]
âWhich bus goes to your place?â
[184]
I asked.
[185]
He smiled.
[186]
âWeâre not taking the bus.
[187]
Youâre going to learn a lot of things
about me today,â he said.
[191]
We walked three blocks until we stopped
at a corner and started waiting.
[194]
A gigantic SUV showed up,
and parked in front of us.
[197]
The driver got off and opened the door.
[200]
I got into the SUV.
[201]
Turns out Peteâs family was beyond rich.
[204]
âWhy do you go to public school
if youâre so well off?â
[207]
I asked.
[208]
âBecause my parents were worried
that âIâd be a spoiled little brat
[211]
If I were friends with rich kids.â, Pete said.
[213]
Thatâs why they wanted me
to go to public school.
[215]
I agreed so I played along.
[218]
After a while we arrived at a huge mansion.
[221]
There were security guards everywhere.
[224]
Pete said, âMy parents are
traveling for work.
[227]
Normally I canât have friends over.
[229]
Come on! I want to show you
some wild stuff.
[231]
You wouldnât believe me
if I told you about all this.
[234]
Thatâs why I wanted you to see
them for yourself.â
[237]
The mansion looked amazing.
[239]
I still couldnât process the fact that
my best friend was so rich.
[243]
How do you make so much money?
[244]
What did his father do for a living?
[247]
Still stunned by the grange of Peteâs house,
[249]
he let me out the back door.
[251]
There were a lot of trees in the garden.
[253]
Pete pointed to one of the trees.
[255]
I looked at the tree he was
gesturing towards but didnât get it.
[259]
Pete laughed out loud,
âBro, look a little closer.
[262]
Noticed anything strange
about these trees?â
[265]
When I looked at the tree again,
[267]
âWhat???
[267]
No way!
[269]
Thatâs impossible,â I screamed.
[271]
What I thought were leaves
turned out to be money!
[274]
As I moved in closer, I realized that
they were all hundred dollar bills.
[278]
Then I looked at other trees.
[280]
They were full of money, too.
[282]
I turned to Pete and said,
âYouâre not pranking me, are you?â
[285]
âOf course not.
[286]
These are âmoney trees.â He said.
[288]
These trees are the source of
my familyâs fortune.
[291]
More specifically, the leaves
we picked from them,â he replied.
[295]
Soon after we went to Peteâs room.
[297]
I couldnât help but start
yelling in excitement.
[300]
âThis is all at once
the most ridiculous, unbelievable
[304]
and miraculous thing
Iâve ever seen in my life!â
[307]
Pete said, âActually, if you look at it,
itâs not a miracle; itâs science.
[312]
My dad is a botanist.
[313]
He worked on this crazy project
for twelve years,
[316]
and he finally succeededâ in engineering trees
that can grow money.â
[321]
Then he took out a box.
[323]
Inside were things that looked like nuts.
[325]
But they were green in color.
[327]
He took one out and offered it to me.
[329]
âWhat youâre holding in your hand
[330]
is a âmoney plant seed.â
[333]
It grows up to six feet in only ten days,
[336]
and yields two hundred one-dollar bills.
[339]
You can think of the bills like fruit.
[340]
If you donât pick the fruit they will be riping.
[343]
In ten more days, one-dollar bills
become ten-dollar bills.
[347]
Once thirty days passed,
[349]
ten-dollar bills mature to hundred-dollar bills.
[352]
After harvesting all the bills
in the tree at full maturity,
[356]
youâll have twenty thousand dollars.
[358]
Then the cycle starts again.
[360]
Ten days later, youâll get one-dollar bills,
[362]
twenty days you get ten dollar bills,
[364]
thirty days you get a hundred
dollar bills, and so on.
[367]
The numbers may sound confusing.
[369]
But all you really need to remember
[371]
is you can get twenty thousand dollars
a month from one tree.
[375]
That adds up to two hundred,
and forty thousand dollars a year.â
[379]
I was listening to him in shock.
[381]
If I hadnât just seen the money trees,
[383]
I would have never believed
what Pete was telling me.
[386]
Pete said,
[387]
âMy dad gives me
one money plant tree every birthday.
[390]
This way, I can grow
my own money trees in the future.
[394]
The seed I gave you is yours now.
[396]
You can pay off
your step dadâs debt with it.
[398]
And thanks to the money tree,
[400]
you can live all your life
without worrying about money.â
[403]
I was so excited.
[405]
This was such a big gift.
[407]
I hugged Pete.
[408]
âI will never ever forget this.
[410]
I can never even dream
to repay youâ I told him.
[413]
Peteâs driver was going to
drop me off at home.
[416]
I said goodbye to my friend,
and got in the SUV.
[418]
On the way I started thinking
about what I needed to do.
[422]
First of all, I decided not to mention
the money tree to my stepdad.
[426]
If I told him, he wouldnât believe me anyway.
[428]
But should I tell my mom?
[429]
It made more sense to hide it
from her as well for now.
[432]
Maybe I could tell her down the line.
[433]
My priority was to grow the tree and pay off
my stepdadâs debt with the first crop.
[439]
When I came home, I found my mom
and stepdad fighting.
[442]
âWhat difference does it make
if you sell the furniture?" my mom said,
[445]
Youâre saying you owe them
ten thousand dollars.
[448]
You couldnât even get a thousand
dollars for everything here!â
[452]
âIf we make a thousand dollars
selling off the furniture,â
[455]
my stepdad shouted back,
[456]
âThen the amount I owe goes down to
nine thousand dollars.
[459]
This is our problem.
[461]
Everyone needs to chip in.â
[463]
Then he turned to me.
[464]
âSam, you canât cruise anymore!
[466]
You are going to quit school,
and start working.
[468]
His tone grew more in tense.
[471]
"You will give me every penny you make,â
[474]
I glowered back at him.
âI will pay off your debt,â
[477]
I said coldly.
âBut you need to ask for more time.
[480]
Convince them to wait
for one more month.
[483]
Tell them that if they agree,
[484]
youâll give them double;
[486]
twenty thousand dollars instead of ten.â
[488]
My stepdad didnât take me seriously.
[491]
âWhat the heck you want kid?
[493]
How are you going to come up with
twenty thousand dollars in a month?â
[496]
he screamed.
[497]
âWhat else you got?â I responded him
calmly, holding my ground.
[500]
âBesides Iâm not doing this for you,
but for mom.â
[504]
He stared at me.
[505]
He didnât believe me,
[506]
but he obviously needed
more time anyway.
[509]
âOkay.
[510]
I will go talk to the guys.
[511]
But if we canât put together
twenty thousand by next month,
[515]
itâs over.
[516]
You will have to say goodbye
to your mom!â
[518]
I went to my room without a word.
[520]
Now I could see
the real extent of Peteâs generosity.
[524]
Thanks to him,
[525]
not only could I pay the depth,
[526]
but I would also never
have to work again in my life.
[529]
After everyone went to sleep,
I sneaked out to the backyard.
[533]
There was a gap between
the tall garden fence,
[535]
and the house itself.
[536]
I was sure that no one
had been there in years.
[539]
It was completely out of sight.
[541]
I could grow the money tree here
without anybody noticing.
[544]
I turned on my phoneâs flashlight to find
a good spot and planted the seed.
[548]
Now all I needed was time.
[550]
The next night, I waited for everyone
to fall asleep.
[553]
I went down to check the tree,
[554]
there was nothing.
[556]
I was so stressed.
[557]
I really wanted everything to go as planned.
[560]
When I checked again in a week,
[561]
I was so excited to see the little plant
coming out of the seed.
[565]
I took a picture and sent it to Pete.
[567]
He immediately replied,
[568]
âCongrats, bro!
[570]
You are the proud owner of
a money tree now.â
[572]
That night, I dreamed of swimming
in a pool of money until the morning.
[576]
When I woke up the next morning,
[578]
I had a huge smile on my face.
[580]
When the ten days were up,
I was incredibly psyched.
[583]
After making sure my mom
and my stepdad were sleeping,
[586]
I went out into the garden.
[588]
When I turned on my phoneâs flashlight,
[589]
the tree was illuminated.
[591]
I almost screamed with joy.
[593]
Just like Pete said,
[594]
there was a lot of one-dollar bills
on the tree!
[597]
I was so happy that
I couldnât stand still.
[599]
I started dancing
as if there was music playing.
[603]
Just about then,
I heard a noise behind me.
[605]
âWhat are you up to?
[607]
Iâve been watching you for days.
[609]
What are you so happy about?â
[611]
When I turned back, I saw my stepdad.
[613]
I was shocked.
[614]
I opened my mouth but couldnât speak.
[616]
My stepdad was holding a big flashlight.
[619]
He held it up to the tree.
[620]
âWhat is this?
[622]
Why did you stick all this money
on this tree?â
[625]
Then he lifted his hand up,
and grabbed one of the dollars.
[627]
First, he looked at the tree,
[629]
then to the money,
[630]
and finally to me.
[631]
He was wild-eyed.
[633]
âIs money growing on this tree?
[635]
Youâd better to have
an explanation for this.
[637]
Tell me whatâs going on!â he screamed.
[640]
The second my stepdad found out,
[642]
all my plans went out the window.
[644]
But donât worry about me.
[645]
You will never guess the incredible things
[647]
that happened in episode two of my story.
[650]
See you in next weekâs video.
[651]
Goodbye for now.
