[0]
hi guys so today I wanted to talk about
[3]
sort of my academic story starting from
[8]
high school to college to med school now
[11]
so if you guys don't know I moved here
[15]
from Korea in seventh grade so I went to
[19]
seventh grade at a private Christian
[22]
school just to like not be around any
[24]
other Koreans to learn English and then
[26]
8th grade I was in public school and
[28]
then ninth grade I attended public
[30]
school as well so in high school my
[34]
parents told me that if I got straight
[35]
A's I would get a computer in my own
[38]
room so I really worked hard for that
[40]
ninth grade
[41]
so ninth grade I did really well in
[42]
school so I got straight A's um and
[46]
after getting straight A's they all
[48]
moved meet the school moved me to like
[50]
honors level classes
[53]
so starting 10th grade on my pretty much
[55]
like never got straight A's again so I
[57]
wasn't the best student in high school
[59]
like I wasn't a bad student but I guess
[62]
compared to some of the other students
[64]
who do really well in high school I was
[66]
not really that student so if you can
[69]
see my ninth grade I took like typical
[73]
English history I took Spanish as my
[77]
foreign language I did I was very active
[80]
in the band so I played a clarinet and I
[83]
play the trumpet in marching band so I
[86]
took a lot of music classes throughout
[88]
high school and that was sort of my my
[92]
hobby I guess so in a 10th grade I took
[95]
some AP classes I took some honors
[97]
classes and I remember thinking 10th
[99]
grade that it was actually really hard
[101]
to get adjusted to being in this new
[103]
environment of honors classes dealing
[106]
with like other students who grew up in
[110]
America spoke fluent English and they
[114]
were always in honors class he was like
[116]
starting from like a little sixth grade
[117]
or something
[118]
so I remember struggling a little bit
[120]
tenth grade and I started to catch up a
[123]
little bit 11th grade and by 12th grade
[127]
I was pretty comfortable and I had what
[130]
you guys would typically call like
[131]
senioritis where I pretty much like a
[134]
lot classes I didn't really take
[138]
anything that seriously I had a lot of
[141]
absences I took a lot of like take
[144]
classes like fashion design band
[147]
percussion ensemble music theory where
[151]
it's just like we just go and like you
[152]
get a good trade I can see here that I
[154]
got like C's and health in phys ed which
[157]
I don't know how it happened but
[158]
probably because I never wanted to go
[160]
but so after high school I attempted a
[164]
small liberal arts college in New York
[167]
called new school I didn't really want
[170]
know what I wanted to do so I think
[173]
that's why I didn't do as well in high
[175]
school because I didn't have that
[176]
direction I needed to do well and I
[179]
think either first or second year at new
[182]
school I took a neuroscience class and
[185]
that class really made me want to pursue
[187]
medicine so I started to look at other
[192]
schools to transfer to because useful
[195]
didn't have a lot of the traditional
[198]
science classes that you need to take to
[201]
to be prepared for med school basically
[204]
so I was looking at different schools in
[207]
the city to transfer to and I ended up
[209]
transferring to Barnard after spending
[212]
two years at U school so when I first
[215]
got to Barnard it was once again a
[217]
really big challenge because everyone at
[220]
Barnard I seem to know what they were
[222]
doing they everyone seemed really smart
[225]
so I remember like first year so I kind
[228]
of struggled I don't think that my
[230]
grades were that great at Barnard my
[232]
first year either but I got the hang of
[236]
things after one year and I started to
[239]
do well and I really started to work
[241]
toward my goal of going to med school
[243]
and I knew that I needed to
[245]
have a certain GPA and get a certain
[249]
score on the MCAT if I wanted to go to
[251]
med school so having those concrete
[253]
goals like really help me work hard and
[256]
studying at Barnard with my classmates
[259]
who are very smart and very competitive
[261]
ultimately helped me prepare for med
[264]
school so I guess world the story is if
[267]
you're not the best student in high
[269]
school don't worry there's plenty of
[272]
time to sort of redeem yourself or
[275]
remarket yourself to be able to go to
[278]
med school if that's your goal so if I
[280]
could go back and give myself some
[282]
advice for med school if that's your
[284]
goal here's what I would tell myself I
[287]
would say take it easy in high school
[289]
develop some hobbies have fun sleep and
[293]
you know develop like develop and find
[296]
out who you are and in college Dec good
[299]
grades and - all on your MCAT and you'll
[303]
be able to get into med school so I hope
[305]
